Show me your Garands!!!

I LOVE M1 garands! Post up your pics. Tell me where you got them, how they shoot, etc. Wife says I can get one after I graduate from CNC Machinists school! I'm thinking of going with a CMP Special. Post'em up

Don't wait too long because the CMP will run out of them. Get a Service grade when you get one. The best way to get a good one is study up on them and what to look for as far as throat and bore erosion then get all your paper work together and actually go to one of the CMP stores and hand pick you one. They have all been rebuilt over the years some many times. I happened onto one that was sold by the CMP back in the early 70's as a collector grade and bought it from an old fellow that was liquidating his belongings getting ready to go into a nursing home. It is an all matching 1956 Springfield. It is a real shooter.

I used to shoot a M1 Grande with a National Match grade barrel at Camp Perry. Man, that rifle would shoot at 600 meters! Sure wish I had one now.

I talked briefly with a gentleman at the clubs' public sight in this year. I didnt get any details on himself or his rifle but it was a beautiful .30 carbine with a Custom walnut stock, side mount scope on a QD base, a Jeweled bolt, peep sights etc. Justa wonderful example of "old school" gunsmithing. He has having trouble with his scope base so he didnt stay long but I heard him say his grandson had used it for deer hunting last year. Talk about an heirloom...... CL

Sorry, no pics yet. I got mine about 4 years ago from CMP. It came with an ugly, oversized, poorly fitted euro-beech stock. Needed some tweaking before it would run right. Had to replace some small parts around the "bullet guide." Also had to replace rear sight spring cover. CMP was very helpful giving me the option of sending the rifle back for repair/replacement or sending me the needed parts for free. Have since replaced the stock with a nice unissued walnut one from Sarco and front and rear walnut handguard scrounged at gunshows.

She's no match rifle but will hold 155gr handloads inside 2" at 100 yards despite the somwhat worn barrel. After the small parts replacement it runs clean almost all of the time. I like the looks of those "specials". The new barrel should help greatly in the accuracy department.

That's why I was thinking of getting the CMP special. i comes with brand new stock and brand new barrel. I should have been born two generations ago. Carrying an M1 garand in Bastone instead of a junk M4 through Baghdad!

They had their road show in Phx a few months back and I picked up a correct grade. It was just too pretty to pass up.

My biggest regret is that I didn't grab a service grade and a CMP special at the same time.

Have to say, they are extremely generous with their grading. The correct grade I picked up was all matching, gorgeous condition and hardly had a ding on it. She cleaned up beautifully.

Wow, that is a sharp looking rifle. I imagine a Garand is one of those rifles I really should have... Kind of like a 30-30 and 30-06

That was the way I got it from the CMP. looks better now that it is cleaned up and oiled. I need to get some new pics.

I think that a Garand should be on everyone's list, it will be one of the last things I would ever get rid of. The CMP service grades are still available and easy to obtain, but they will probably be gone soon.
