Well, here is what I ended with, the tree top loads.

Hornady SST 2 3/4" 250 grain SST's 1800FPS

Winchester Supreme 2 3/4" 260 grain Nosler PT Gold 1800FPS

Remington Core Lokt Ultra 2 3/4" 260 grain CL Ultra 1900FPS

I also shot the Federal Fusion's, Federal Blue Box Sabot's and Winchester grey box Foster type slugs. Nothing really notable out of the bunch. VERY happy with the way the gun shoots, not a bad deal really. The trigger is excellent, recoil is fairly mild and this thing should drive tacks with a dedicated range day. I gotta figure out which slug I wanna use, then do the final zeroing.

I also confirmed my muzzleloader. 2 pellets of Pyrodex, 295 grain Powerbelt HP. Not super keen on the Powerbelts, but they seem to shoot fine. The last time I used them they hammered deer, but were a little messy. Pretty fun to break out the muzzloader though and get some time behind it. Pretty sure it was over 10 years ago I used it last, if not longer.

Looks good buddy :) ...Good luck with the shot gun hunt pal, you well do just fine!

Well, I'd say it's a 2 .75 inch gun--plenty good enough for deer at reasonable distances. Great job, Scotty.

Scotty

You are there. The slug gun is a shooter for sure.

They will all work. Looks like that Savage will be great for the family to use.

I cannot understate my recommendation for the Lightfield Hybrid EXP slugs. We had four rifled barrel shotguns that shot various sabot slugs just like your Savage does. The Lightfields improved every gun and three of the four improved dramatically.

Best of luck with your hunt!

There you go! For 125 yards more or less that is deadly shooting.

I measured all of the groups and got 2.250 from the Winchesters and just under 2.0" Outside to Outside from them. Pretty solid shooter. I cleaned it up last night, now I gotta grab a few more boxes of slugs and do the finalized zeroing. It isn't like shooting a great shooting rifle, but it does seem light years ahead of what to expect from a shotgun.

CC, I may grab a box of the Lightfields if they are available, just to see what they do. Thanks for the heads up.

Good luck on the hunt pal! ...I'm pulling for ya

Thanks Lou, few more weeks for muzzleloader, then we will be into the regular gun season. It'll be cool if Lori/Brandon get a chance to smoke a deer with it.

muzzleloader too huh? Awesome

Yeah, yesterday was the opener for it. Pretty fun to hunt with the muzzleloader. Been a few years since I have hunted with it, but now I have the land to hunt, so I am trying to capitalize on it.

That 20 ga Slugger should be the ticket for you guys! Scotty has me stewing over trying a slug gun again. I have a fully rifled Benelli barrel with open sights that i never really liked. Trying to get my dad to sell his Remmy 1100 with a Cantlever rifled barrel.

My buddy just picked up an 870 Remington with the rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount. Looking forward to seeing how that shoots. Should be able to get it out pretty quick, since I still have to finalize zeroing on my 20 gauge.

Hey- those are good groups and more consistient brand to brand/ group to group than I can do. So please tell me what you can about your "technique" i.e. rest vs no rest, tight hold vs free recoil etc. Thanks. Also does anyone know if Nosler loads a 12ga slug. Thought I heard they were in the winchester line but not sure. CL

Troy, I do the same with the slug gun as I do with the rifles, bag it up and only hold the pistol grip, concentrating on a trigger press.

Winchester Supreme makes their line of slugs with a PT Gold bullet. Can't tell you how they work yet, but I am expecting them to leave dead deer in their wake!

Got out yesterday between rain showers. One last sessin=ion w/o the gloves. Since I missed the big one this year, I took the old "mooseberg" along for a post season check. Two shots Off hand at 100yds. One in an 8 inch bull a little low and left, the second slightly below that eight inch circle at 6:00. The "Mooseberg" looks pretty good with your VXII dosent it Joel?

100yards is a long way....when you are chunkin big hunks of lead

I tried some 3/4 oz "tipped barnes expanders". Off the sand bags the same 8 inch bull saw shots landing at exactly 3:00 and 9:00 and one two inches below the 6:00 mark.

Might as well stick with the Hornady SST's off hand.

I didnt shoot the "Moose" this year right before the season. I got enough recoil from sighting in the 16ga. (the BIL missed what he described as a "prayer shot" at 15 yards   )

I did notice that I am REALLY getting weak and its tough to get any kind of an off hand hold thats decent. New years resolution for 2013 is no practice from the bench!
The Moose is cleaned and put away for the winter. THAT is REALLY depressing.

Any thoughts on improving my results are appreciated . Thanks CL
