Some '06 work...

Doing some work with an '06… a cartridge I've not used in a good long while. Kimber Montana with a 24" bbl. so I should be able to get the very most out of the cartridge- not wanting to turn it into a .300 since I've already got one but should get the full '06 potential without resorting to overly hot loads.

What's the thinking these days- tough 150gr bullets like the AB and TTSX at 3000fps or the proven 180 Partition at 2700? Maybe something like the 165g in the middle?

Maybe at the '06 mild velocity the 180 Corelokt is a reasonable answer at a reasonable price. Easily obtainable in my area and a "no fuss" solution to feeding the beast. Early results with a mixture of ammo shows that rifle is not finicky and should get reasonable hunting accuracy with about anything I stick in it.

Likely a caribou and black bear gun with an opportunistic moose thrown in if bullwinkle shows himself. For a dedicated moose or brown bear hunt (as well as more specialized quests for sheep and goat) I've got other pieces of firepower.

Just wondering out loud here on a bad weather Saturday….

The 150 grain E-Tip and/or the 150 grain TSX will perform quite well in the 30-06. I have several loads with the 150 grain E-Tip worked up to shoot this coming week. Any of the 165s will give you reasonable performance on game, and that does include the CoreLokt and Ballistic Tip. The Partitions and AccuBonds have proven themselves in multiple weight offerings. It is the best of times for those of us who shoot the .30-06.

That 180g Corlokt should do 2750 - 2800fps easy in your 24 inch barrel. A no nonsense, hard working, very effective combo.

I load 58 to 59 grains of Ramshot Hunter and a 180 grain bullet, sometimes an AccuBond and sometimes a Partition. Comes out about 2750 fps from a 22.5 inch barrel.

I also shoot a bit of 155 Custom Competitions with IMR4350. I will switch to a faster powder when this rush on components allows me to find an 8-lb jug of Ramshot Big Game.

I have used IMR 4350 in the .30-06 with good results for 40 years or more. When I do my part, I can get 1/2 MOA groups in my .30-06 and 165 grain Partitions.
