Well I'm going on a hunting trip to SD this April to hopefully bag some birds. Anyone have any experience hunting birds in the Black Hills? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Steve

No tips, Steve, but best of luck to you. I've never hunted the big birds, but I hope to one day soon.

Officially jealous....grew up in the great state but cant aafford to go back. Have friends who have gotten them. They are a beautiful variety of the bird. Lots of white in the tail as I recall. There is a lot of public land in the hills. Best of luck! Post the pics. CL

Just be sure to pattern your gun.

Sounds like it should go without saying, but the one time I had a shot at a gobbler... I MISSED!!!

I was using a new "super full" choke AND different ammo. A few minutes after the tom ran off and I gathered my senses, I fired at a knot in a tree that said gobbler was standing near. Come to find out that at a paced 40 yards, the spread was only about 4" and a few inches high. Just enough to shoot right over his head.

I know... I'm a dumbass.

The retelling of this tale is hard enough. Don't be too cruel. LOL

Everyone messes up eventually, I submit to you as evidence my less than stellar shooting last fall on my grizzly hunt

Steve,
Good luck on your turkey hunt I would LOVE to try that one day.

Got that covered. 3 1/2 inch Hevi-shot mixed blend with a jelly head choke outta my benelli super black eagle.

You're telling me! I used to use winchester supreme 3 1/2. I pulled the trigger on the hevi-shot and it felt like i got hit by a car!

SE,

I have shot a couple birds here in MI.
You have the right combo. Pattern it out to 50 yds so you know exactly where it is shooting. Just make sure you keep your head down on the stock and look down the rib, if you do not have turkey sights or else you will shoot over the bird.

Use good camo and don't move come show time. A big Tom is smart. They can see your heart beat and hear you think.

Good luck buddy!

Shooting those loads always brings to mind an account I read of...? I think it was W.D.M. Bell. Anyhow, He was shooting elephant with a 4 bore and somehow wound up with a double charge. If I remember correctly, he was on horseback and was thrown to the ground and dislocated his shoulder.

That's what I call RECOIL.
