Suppressor?

Am considering buying my first suppressor.

Have some experience using government and privately supplied suppressors, but never purchased my own. Looking for input please. They're expensive, and I want to get this right.

I'd use it primarily on my 308 Win Rem 700 with the varmint weight barrel, the "Green Machine" it's known as affectionately.

Secondarily... I'd love to also use it time to time on my 30-06 hunting rifle, a Rem 700 CDL, with a much lighter contour barrel.

Possible?

Most .30 cal cans are going to be threaded 5/8x24. Barrel contour only matters if it's too thin to thread and leave shoulder to butt the can against. Unless it's just uber thin, likely a non issue.

I've been circling the bait on this since last summer when I shot my Barrett with a friend's can...as a guy who's already lost a significant portion of my hearing, it's just a good idea.

I can only speak to the ones I used personally- a Silerenco Omega and a Thunder Beast Ultra 7. Both are up in the "premium category" and should last a lifetime on a bolt gun.

Silencerco Hybrid. Good up to 45/70. I have their Harvester model, good to 300 win mag. Perfect hunting setup. Direct thread and light. Makes a big center fire sound like a .22 mag, subsonic in my TC Encore .300 BLK sound like a good hot pellet gun.

I love my thunder beast ultra 9 cb. Either it or a ultra 7 would fit the bill for you. If you planning to swap on different rifles I would get one of the CB. It will have brakes or flash hiders that you leave attached to your rifle. It will limit the POI shift when running it between rifles. You should be able to get enough shoulder to thread most sporter barrels, the CB style brake will help with different barrel diameters.

Thanks all.

Ya, I'm thinking it would spend about 8-9 months a year on the heavier 308 rifle, then a month or so before hunting season it would likely migrate over to the lighter 30-06 hunting rifle.

The 9 is quieter but the 7 is more compact for hunting. Either way you won’t want to hunt without it ever again

I can use my ultra 9 on my hunting 308, my target 308, and ar15. Works like a charm.

I’ve even worked up some subsonic loads that are amazingly quiet. Quieter than most air rifles.

I also have a rimfire suppressor. My daughter will shoot that all day long!

I see a couple more suppressors in my future. A 9 or 45 for pistols and another centerfire can, the Gemtech tracker is a nice economical option for a one rifle dedicated hunting suppressor. I have a buddy who runs a dead air sandman ti that seems like a nice one. The thunderbeast are really popular in the precision rifle application for least POI shift.

In Europe it depends on the country, the Scandinavian countries and the U.K. all allow them, others do not.

Dr Mike, I remember Cheyenne talking about some electronic petitions that were started in Canada in an attempt to change the laws in Canada. Did they not get enough signatures or are they still ongoing or ?

TB 78. Excuse my complete ignorance on anything to do with suppressor's, I know nothing about them. But what is the outer covering for/about in your top picture with the caribou?

It’s a suppressor cover, it has two real functions, to reduce the heat induced mirage coming off a hot suppressor and from burning yourself on them.

A suppressor will get really hot in repeated shots.

Since I picked up my first suppressor a couple years ago... I’ve noticed the barrels on my rifles have gotten noticeably shorter.

I shoot a 12 oz 9” .30 cal can (SAS Ti Arbiter)... and a 13 oz 8” (9” OAL) .30 cal can (SilencerCo Harvester). The 9” suppressor is noticeably quieter than the 8”, especially when shooting .22 and 6.5mm billets through them.

All my cans are direct thread, and I use a 5/8x24-1/2x28 adapter when shooting them on the 1/2x28 stuff.

I’ve got an 18” barreled RAR in 7/08, Suppressed it’s the same weight and length as a LA Rem 700 with a 24”.

Kids and other inexperienced shooters MUCH prefer shooting the suppressed rifles.

Amazingly enough out of my guns the only one that occasionally can make me realize I just fired off something loud when out hunting is a little 6MM in a model 7. It's a handy gun but with the short barrel its muzzle blast borders on ridiculous for such a small cartridge. If there's no wind and I happen to forget I have my hood up with a hooded jacket which cups the sound, it will make me sit up and pay attention. When shooting off the bench I always double up on hearing protection so noise is a none issue no matter what I'm shooting.

There is no way that petitions will move the government to move on something like this. It would require a change of government, and even a Conservative government would be in difficulty if they introduced something of this nature. To imagine that a Liberal and/or NDP (socialist) government would take such a step is beyond reason. If the USA moves to make suppressors more generally available, and there are no major outrages in the coming half-century or so, Canada may consider permitting such. For the moment, ignorance reigns (much as it does with Democrats in the US Congress).

I saw a U-Tube where they make a adapter that threads on a rifle /pistol barrel that allows you to use ordinary auto oil filters and works very well for several shots before needing replacing.
The adapter is required to have a ATF approval permit but you can buy the filters anywhere.

I've had two TBAC for over a few years now, and have no complaints, very accurate. I would highly recommend them. I use my .30 cal on everything even my bolt 223 5R Remington, works great. I do like the longer cans since they give the most reduction in sound.

For the .223/5.56 I went with the Surefire SOCOM-2 can since they're used by our Military.

I really like my Omega, it can be configured to a length just over 6 inches. It also has variety of endcaps so you can have a flat cap or the anchorbrake. Additionally it has thread mounting options or it comes with their ASR quick attach mount.

In the lightest configuration it is barely over 13 ounces, this is how I run mine most of the time.

I also have a Specwar 762, which is very durable but quite heavy at more than 24 ounces. I also have an AAC 300TM which is all titanium. It is just under 15 ounces, but strictly thread mount and over 9" in length.
