We've just got here yesterday and my buddy Frank scored with his 257 Weatherby on a big bodied 8 pointer. I have no luck so far. Spotted some eye popper this morning but their very weary. My 6.5 - 284 will get her chance. I'll try my luck again this afternoon.

It was 23 degrees this AM. Not sure what the wind chill factor was, but we were freezing our arse. Too cold for the Cali boys.

Ah, to be on the Texas high plains again. It was -16 and snowing today. That should keep the deer moving.

Thanks for the update. I think the temp here this morning is around minus 20.
Look forward to hearing how that 6.5 x 284 knocked down the BB.

Blessings,
Dan

Looking forward to the photos and am glad you were able to get to Texas for some hunting!

Best of luck!

Just curious - where in Texas are you hunting and what is the best time of the year to hunt there? When is the rut?

Charlie, I think we came a week early. It such a long season. I believed it start the 2nd week o November and last until the 2nd week of January. We're hunting the Panhandle area around Quail, south of Amarillo.

I'm back home now guys... no luck. It's a combination of warm weather, full moon and bad timing. I was hoping to shoot a nice one. As a matter of fact, I did see one that would have been a shooter but he did not gave me a chance. He turned tail before I can put a bead on him. Frank missed on a very large buck but able to shoot a descent 8 pointer. All in all, it's still a very nice hunt.

Here's some of the picture of the hunt.

So now they're ear tagging those Texas deer! Man, those black ones don't have much for head gear, but they are certainly large enough. My hunting partner, a native fellow, calls them "slow elk." Rommel, glad you made it back and had a good time. The Panhandle was one of my favourite places. I worked as a pipe fitter out of Pampa after getting out of the Corps. I worked the aqueduct from Lake Meredith that runs down to west Texas and then on a sewage disposal system for Borger. I sure did come to think highly of that country. Those pictures are some fine looking deer.

Well heck, you got to hunt Texas which is pretty neat. Am glad your buddy Frank got a buck.

Perhaps next year for you?

Guy
