The .270 vs. meat-a-bou

Took a buddy out for a little freezer filling adventure.

The weather is pretty mild and good numbers of caribou are still floating around in the AO...so off we went.

We intercepted a pretty large herd in a frozen swamp as they were pushing east... a nice cow turned broadside at 180 yards and my buddy shot it with my .270. One and done...right there. We all get wrapped up in the neatest rifles and the latest developments in ammunition and bullets..

The rifle is a pretty plain Browning X-Bolt with a well used 3-9x40...ammo was also nothing special- plain Federal 130gr "Blue Box".

Dropped it like the fist of an angry God.

There is a reason why classic cartridges are still around. Excellent report.

Congrats! On the forum, and in my real world, am seeing a lot of success from the plain ol' .270 & .30-06 and similar cartridges this year.. (y)

I haven't made a shot with my .300WSM that I can remember...that I couldn't have made equally as well with my .270.

Ammunition- even the plain Jane stuff- is just so much better these days that the performance gaps between the standard cartridges and the big boomers just isn't there like it used to be.

The premium bullets do an even better job or making that performance gap vanish.

The old .270 quite possibly my favorite cartridge still. On these Mississippi deer the 270 kills like lightning with the old cup n core bullets.

Good work Hodge. Up in 13 I'm guessing? Hoping to draw that tag next year and work up a load for my 6mm for it. Congratulations!

Yep- I do almost all my big game hunting in 13. That is a great tag to draw, next year should be pretty high odds since so many folks drew this year.

I'm hoping they give out 5K again to make it so. With the herd level as it is I figure they will. I was going to do the Tier 2 registration but with the possibility of higher odds, and not really wanting to limit myself to moose in 13 only, I'm going to try for the draw again. Of course come February I'll most likely be calling myself all sorts of names for doing so when I don't draw anything...... again. Going to party hunt it with the wife so we'll see if she brings me some luck.
