they're here!

Wow?!?! The load data looks to me as kinda dissappointing. I was kinda expecting the big mags around 2750 and the WM around 2500.

Thanks for posting the update with pictures. Looks to be an awesome long range bullet.
The actual testing of this bullet revealed a BC that was even higher than the listed .720.

Nosler's load data has prodced speeds lower than I would have thought. I plan on testing them in my 338 RUM when I get mine so we will have to compare notes.

Those are some long slugs :) as for the reloading data it is quite likely that that isn't what the final loads will be, there wasn't much time for testing before they released the bullets, good chance more realistic loads will be in their new manual.

I think the data is impressive when compared to a 300 grn bullet in the old standby, .375 H&H.

Looks like 2600 fps is about max, with that data, and a 300 gr Nosler - about what I'd expect from a .338 Lapua or .338 Rem Ultra Mag. If you look at Hodgdon's web site, the data they publish for the 300 gr Sierra is in the 2600 fps range for the 300 gr Sierra, using the .338 Lapua and the .338 RUM.

That's a lot of bullet guys... That long bullet with tremendous SD & BC will carry the velocity very well at long range. Likely the accuracy too. Remember that for long range, it's not the drop that gets us, it's the wind. This thing is going to slice through the wind...

Really liked the photo of the expanded 300 gr AccuBond at low velocity. Look at all the shank left intact! Cool. This thing is going through elk. No doubt in my mind.

There aren't many .375 H&H loads that will shove a 300 gr bullet over 2,600 fps, and the .375 bullet doesn't have the tremendous SD & BC seen with this .338 version...

I think we're looking at a real winner for long-range hunters.

Launched at 2600 fps, the .338" 300 gr bullet is still doing 1900+ fps at 600 yards according to JBM.

Started at the same speed, a 300 gr AccuBond from my .375 H&H is down to 1600 fps at 600 yards, for sake of comparison.

Wind drift? At 600 yards, in a 10 mph crosswind the .375 moves 33.8" sideways, the .338 version, only 20" - now that's a huge difference! All due to the high BC of the .338 bullet.

The reason i was disappointed is that I can push a 300gr SMK at 2750fps....start running those numbers with an extra 150fps and you start the wow factor.

Had a frustrating night at the loading bench (more on that later) but I think I got a few loaded up well enough to run downrange today. I'll try and post a report tonight when I get home.

At what range would you like to see one of these run through milk jugs? As many as it will likely go through I think I only have enough to do it once...

Slam one into the jugs at 100 yds.

What loading problems did you run into?

JD, Seating depth consistency....even measured off the ogive, it seemed to vary significantly from round to round. Checked everything on the die and all seemed tight....not sure what the heck was going on? But it about drove me nuts last night!

Are you loading a compressed powder charge? Might need a tighter neck tension.

JD338

JD, I don't think they are compressed....I could still hear powder rattling in the case, although there wasn't much room from the sound of it....who knows, it was late, I was tired....I'll take another look at it with fresh eyes.

And now, on to the report! I have good news and I have some not so good news. The good news is that I found my new hunting load for the big Lapua! This is 90.5 grains of H1000 that gave me an average velocity of 2666fps, ES 19.97, SD 10.00 and a 1.02"-.338" = .682" group.

As for the bullet testing in the milk jugs at 100 yards, velocity of the bullet fired was 2666fps....I'm not 100% sure exactly what happened, but here is what I think. The bullet penetrated 4 jugs after which it appears the bullet curved out of the path of the jugs and went who knows where as I was unable to find it. Now, the interesting part of the test was that there were 2 holes in the 4th jug.

And in the bottom of the 4th jug I found 33.1 grains of the bullet....so it would appear that it had at least a partial separation, but without recovering the rest of the bullet I can not say how much of it blew up.

A close up of the piece of jacket and chunks of lead

The other side of the larger chunk

Now this will not prevent me from using it and in no way is an attempt to say that it is not a good bonded hunting bullet, just an unexpected result. I think I will definitely be attempting this again at some point just out of curiosity.

Here is a video of the jugs being hit.

That looks like a pretty devastating hit on the video. The accuracy is certainly there. It looks as if you have a petal that tore off, which isn't too surprising in light of the severe test the bullet was subjected to. I'd not be overly concerned about that bullet at that velocity.

I'm not too concerned about it...33 grains leaves a whole lot of bullet left when you're starting with 300! Just looked at the numbers in my ballistics program and that bullet should have hit with 4323 ft-lbs of force at 100 yards. And it looks like it will drop below the recommended 1800fps after 800 yards.

I was extremely pleased with the accuracy for having just thrown a few loads together...I think this one has some serious potential with a little more fine tuning!

Looks like you have a very good load.
Drink more milk and test the bullet again.

Awesome test buddy! Weird about that big torn off piece though. Your speed looks really good though! Not making my resistance to a big 338 really taper off!

Just remembered that RL33 should be coming out soon with the claim of adding up to 150fps over what's currently available in the 338 lapua...can you imagine this bullet at 2800fps!

That's what I was talking with JD about yesterday. I imagine even an easy 100FPS would be a worthwhile gain. Hope it works like advertised.. Would be slick for those big 33's!

Scotty,

I can see a 338 RUM in your future.

Man------ You all read me like a book!

Did they make any .338RUM M70s? Might Scotty have to buy a R.... Ruh.... Remington? :)
