Yup, i been told it has something to do with age.

Gone are the .458s, .375s, .338s, the .300s and the STW, all. This old carcass, at 76, won't take the beating like it used to. But there is cash under the mattress now, so what is next?

There is space between the .257Bee and the 7MM Mag. for something (.260/ .264/ .270) and between the 22-250s and the .257B. Maybe even something based on a "lever". Hey that'd be ok.

And Christmas is just around the corner. Any suggestions from the peanut gallary?

I gota get out, "in a few more days", the Dr. says though. I'm already on a first-name basis at the regional gun-shops :mrgreen: .

Well, there are certainly plenty of cartridges between the brackets you name. In fact, there are almost too many to exhaust the speculation. I still like the 280 Rem, and the 270 WSM shoots far better than it should. The 260 is always fun. It will be fun to see what is suggested and what you wind up selecting.

Jim, if I remember right, you have had the 270WSM, so I will say the 264 Win Mag for the between 257 and 7mm Mag.. Then, on the between 22-250 and up to the 257WBY, maybe a 6mm Remington or 243......

Just my thoughts.
 
Try this out for size......

Get some white poker chips..... write on each chip a caliber you are considering.... place them in a coffee can..... and everytime you head out to the LGS.... draw a chip.

Just let fate take its course.....
 
I don't know what you are looking for but I am older and just traded recently for a .257 Roberts which is a really fun cartridge to spend time with. Also easy on the shoulder.
 
There are some good ones in there fellows. Front runners are 6mm/.243 cal. and the .264WM.

Good idea about the poker chips too :grin:

Scotty's right about me havin' a .270wsm before. You know, I never got over sellin' that rifle. It had an over-sized chamber-neck area and after one resize I had split necks with nickle Winchester cases. Probally one of the better, new calibers around. Another rifle may find it's way here, don't know.

OT, my very 1st highpowered rifle was a .257 Roberts, back in '51, nice caliber.

I would look at cartridges like the 243 Win, 6mm Rem, 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08 in a lightweight rifle. Maybe a bolt gun or a Browning BLR or maybe even a Ruger No 1 A. Lots of great choices for you out there.

Old Jim, I am Old Charlie (hence Oldtrader3), between age and health issues I am barely vertical half the time. I just sold my .340 Bee and bought a 9.3x74R because I can push a 279 grain Partition at 2300+ fps and with lower recoil, comprised of a push compared to a wack and still lay an elk low at reasonable ranges.

For fooling around at the range, I have stocked quite a few bullets and some Remington and Nosler cases for the 110 grain .257 Roberts as a play project to finish the stock rehab and eventual tuning of that setup. I have owned a couple of other .257's over the last half century (Winchesters) but this one is a Browning High Power (FN) action and has been a project so far.
 
I must say that one of the most fun rifles I shoot is my 243. I have Tikka T3 with a Leupold 4.5-14 scope with CDS. I can dial that scope up and down all day long, shooting at any distance.

Very accurate and easy on the shoulder. Coyotes, deer and cats beware.
 
I let me Bro-in-Law carry my BLR in the woods for a few days. He was very impressed with its handling qualities. They are very nice when chambered in SA offerings. I have a 358WIn which is very soft on the shoulder yet still delivers the mail. I think a BLR in 7mm-08 or a .243 would make a nice walkabout rifle.
 
...right between the .257 Bee & the 7 mag, I'd opt fer a nice little popgun 6.5X47 or Creedmore...

I totally saw that coming! Now if Winchester would just chamber these in an Extreme Weather or (even better) a Featherweight, I'd be looking to sell a kidney...

And, what is the going rate for a kidney, Kurt? That would be quite a shock were Winchester to do such a thing. If the price is right, I might be tempted to sell some organ and buy a featherweight so chambered.
 
I heard that you can get $7000 for a kidney but I only have one so I am out as a donor and stuck with my gun safe at its present level!

Cheyenne got me interested in the 275 H & H , my uncle and I are in the process of building one. My uncle has a 280 Ross I really like also. So maybe Kodiak would consider something a little older, and a little different that can still do a good job in the field. That 275 H & H can reach right out there if everything I am reading is correct. We will let you know when it is done
