Tomorrow at the range with the 30-06

I will be trying 165gr HPBT trying to finalize that load. Working with the concept of faster powder than H4350 type powder and using CCI 250gr primers to light the powder and burn it all up in a 22" barrel. Will see how sound and effective my theory will be tomorrow.

Also 180gr bullets using IMR4350.

Also, 240gr Woodliegh as I try and finalize my ultra heavy load for my 30-06.

Temp should be at starting time 67 degrees and by the time I finish it will be around 75 degrees, with winds at around 5 mph. Should be a perfect morning to accomplish some final details and hopefully good accuracy along with acceptable velocities for cartridge and bullet weight.

Kind of fun when you take a plan old 06 and can develop so many different loads with so many different weights of bullets. It keeps one from getting bored when your rifle is not limited to just a few really good bullet weights and loads as most cartridges are.

What's that like?

It is wonderful, peaceful, relaxing and gentle. Just thought I would give you an image of how it will be for me tomorrow since you have such calm days with little to no breeze out there where you live.

I have had and interesting day at the range. I am going to compromise on a 165gr load for hunting. The accuracy was not the best I have achieved with this 06 but is is consistent over multiple groups and velocity with no over max pressure signs is outstanding at 2922fps on average out of a 22" barrel.

I was able to use AA2495BR which is almost like IMR4895 on burn rate and 250 mag CCI primers to achieve this. Here is the worst group then the best group with the other two groups in between these but consistency was the key and at these velocities and with this acceptable hunting accuracy I will be going with when it comes to my 165gr load.

Now what I am really excited about and embarrassed at the same time is my 240gr Ultra Heavy for cartridge load using the 240gr Woodliegh. I am excited because I know I am about 2grs under max and got 2428fps on the average meaning I will get to at least 2475fps and possibly 2500fps out of a 22" barrel and that is not shabby at all for a 240gr bullet out of an 06. What I am embarrassed and upset about is that I had the first two rounds right together and got to talking to the guy next to me and rushed not only the time between rounds but new when I pulled the trigger that I had rush my shot and wished I could have called it back.

But I will do it again plus work up in half grain sets to see where I can go on velocity without being over max.

Here is my 220gr load and target from the other day

Well not too shabby. I learned a long time ago to make 4 rounds of each load. That way if something goes off I have a #4 "verifier" round. Saves me from me having to reload and re shoot the same load.

Good point, but I should have been concentrating on what I was doing instead of letting myself be caught up in the thoughts of a conversation.

Happens to all of us. Hence the #4 round I always make. Sometimes it is the barrel heat that throws the #3 out of a great group. Plus saves on gas ...having to drive 15 miles to my range.

It is from my house 16.5 miles, so yes on saving gas. I will be there in the morning really early to finalize my hunting load by verifying what I did to day, but will not be shooting the 240gr. Thought I had some more in an other box but there were only two of them. I will get some more because I am going to find out just how fast my 06 can push the 240gr load and also see it accuracy.

I bet those 240's pack a nice thump in the ol' /06. What do you plan on pummeling with the 240's?

boar to buff and anything in between depending on terrain and conditions. I have used this on boar out of my Kimber Montana 8400 and it did not shake them like my 300Wby they just collapsed in a heap. It really destroys the skeletal structure while opening up and creating a great wound channel letting air in and blood out the exit hole. I would not be afraid to use it up close on anything and it is a 300yds bullet especially if I get it to 2475-2500fps and I think that is were it will end up.

With the 220's scootin' like that and your 358 to boot who needs the 240 gr?

Bullet, what is up with the 180 grain load with IMR-4350. Ya mentioned you were going to try that also.

For fun, it is like chocolate on top my ice cream.  POP, if I get to go to Africa again I will use the 240gr bullet and on a big hog down here every once in a while, but mostly just because the 06 can do it. You think about a 240gr bullet moving 2500fps, that is a freight train. Just like to show what he 06 can do.

It's like watching a tractor pull at the county fair. I am the guy with the old tractor that pulls up to the line to drag a load that the big boys usually pull with their new shiny tractors. This 240gr is out there...whew-hooo.

All I had were flat based Speer and Sierra and nothing spectacular in accuracy or velocity. I need some Acuubonds and Ballistic Tips but I am out of both and short on play money until next month.

The 240 load is impressive for sure.

Yes, it has a SD of .361, it is really fun to shoot and watch it hit down range but it is awesome to see it just collapse an animal of size.
