Two Rifles, Same Caliber?

Ive got 4 270 Winchesters and a 270 Gibbs. All of them have different loads. One of my Ruger Hawkeye 270s is loaded with 110gr Vmaxs for coyotes and plinking, and my new Tikka will be loaded with a stouter bullet but deer and elk. The others each like different bullets

got 5 223's, twisted 8,9,10, and 12, they all shoot 55's decent, do shoot alot of hevies in the 8 twist though.

I have a 7RM, 7x57, and 7WSM. I shoot different bullets in them. Pretty much settled on 162 Amaxs/160 AB's for the 7WSM, 140 BT's for the 7x57, and I haven't really messed with the 7RM in quite awhile, so I will have to get back to you on that one. I am thinking I will give the 175 PT's a whirl in the 7RM though. It has always done well with the heavier bullets..

I have three .35 Whelens. The custom mauser gets the 225 gr. TSX bullet, the Remington 700 will get either the 250 gr. Speer or Hornady once I determine which it likes best and the Ruger M77 will be used for cast bullet shooting. Each rifle has it's own set of dies for reloading. The bullet for the Ruger is a 270 gr. clone of the Lyman #3589 with a minor change. rather than being a bluff round nose like the #3589, it has a small flat about 1/8" wide which is supposed to give it a slightly harder slap when it hits game. The bullet came from a group buy on the Cast Boolit site and the mold was made by David Mos. It would probably shoot a bit better in the Mauser with it's 1 in14" twist but that's reserved strictly for the TSX. 8) I'm hoping that it will stabilze in the Ruger's 1 in 16" barrel. Lots of plans and no time. :(

I have one caliber in two rifles, and considering a third.

Each rifle has a "preferred" load that I shoot in it, but it's factory ammo and the caliber is .223/5.56. I've considered getting another rifle in one of my two hunting calibers but haven't really seen the need for it. Small to medium game goes to the 25/06 and medium to heavy game goes to the .300 Win Mag. Those two calibers will handle anything I care to hunt in North America, excluding rabbit sized critters but those generally get dispatched with the 12 Guage.

I am however considering a .270 WSM and putting the .300 further towards the back of the safe. I'm a one load per rifle kind of guy as I hate zeroing scopes. I don't mind confirming zero, I just hate the process of zeroing and would rather concentrate on shooting groups when I'm practicing. Right now I don't have a lot of overlap between my calibers, in what I consider hunting calibers, but my next one will probably be something like a 9.3 x 62 instead of the .270 WSM as I consider that to be too much overlap in calibers for my taste.

Man, that would be a tough one. Don't have any 9.3's, but I do have a 270WSM and it is an awesome performer..

Not as tough as some may think. :)

The 9.3 would serve as my Asiatic Buffalo gun for a pending hunt down under in a couple of years. The .270 WSM is too close to the .300 WM to make it feasible in my opinion. That is not to say that it's a bad caliber, it isn't. If I didn't already have a .300 WM I would probably get a .270 WSM and may eventually get one anyway. I'm finding that with today's modern bullets I can use a lot less gun and get better results. That alone has me wanting one.

Vince,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know about better results with today's bullets in lighter weights, but certainly results that are as good are obtainable primarily due to bullet integrity and assured penetration.

I had three .32 Winchester Special lever action rifles at one time. I had a Model 94, standard carbine (1946), Model 55 take down (1926) and a Model 64 Deluxe (1936). I shot all of them and hunted with the carbine and the Model 64.

I have two Tikka T3 LS models. Bought new back in 2005. First store that got one in, got my money. My wife took over the first one, so since I had a deposit still on the other, I bought it for me!

I reloaded for both. Both love Retumbo with 140gr AB's....just one rifle likes a bit more powder. My wife just prefers the factory ammo...dont ask me why!!!

Now my father-in-law took the first rifle over.....got to sell it to him! lol

I have 2 30'06s. One is a scoped and the other a sporterized but never drilled & tapped 03-A3 w/ a peep sight.

Both are more accurate than I can shoot, but I figred the peep limited the effective range of the rifle and it perked up w/ heavier bullets, so I run 200s in the Springfield while I run 165s in the scoped rifle.

I always figured if I were to hunt with my dad's '03A3, I would load the 220 Partitions since I'm not that great of long range shooter with the issue sights.

I always loaded the 180 grain Winchester round nosed bullets for handloads in my 03-A3 with the peep sights. They worked great on deer just fine at the ranges that I was using them and DRT'ed every deer that I shot with them in that rifle. There is no issue with shooting the same bullet in both ifles though if they are equally accurate.

I have loaded the 180 PT, in two 06's, two 300 Wb, and one 300 win mag. Probably a couple more somewhere.

I have two Model 70 rifles chambered in 7mm WSM and shoot 160gr Accubonds in one and 140gr TTSX in the other. My lighter one will go sheep hunting and the EW I'll take caribou hunting.
