Unblooded Rifles

Just thinking of rifles that have yet to draw blood, which makes for a most interesting year.

I have a "new" Model 94 in 356 Winchester that has not drawn blood for me. I hope to have a 180 grain load worked up for it shortly. My other rifles Model 94s shoot quite well with 220 grain Speers and 250 grain Kodiaks. This one actually shoots MOA with the 220 grain load that I worked up in another rifle, but I wanted to work up a lighter load for deer.

I have two new Model 70s (270 WSM and 30-06) that are unblooded. I now have a couple of sub-MOA loads for the 270 and a couple of MOA loads for the 30-06. I think they will need to be worked on this Fall. My previous 270 WSM had a number of loads that shot 0.5 inch, but I traded it for a Swarovski scope this winter.

I have a 350 Remington Magnum that has yet to draw blood. I've just fussed over it too long, but it has several loads that are MOA or better. So, what's the wait?

I have a .303 Ross in the safe that hardly ever gets shot. I'm not fussy about shoot with iron, but it manages 2.5 to 3 inches at 100 yards. I really need to carry it for moose this fall. Perhaps it will be my summer project as I have never worked up a load for it since putting it in my safe. To this point, I've only shot factory ammo through it. It is certainly a Canadian classic, and deserves better than to spend life as a safe queen.

Then, there is my new Hawkeye in 358, which now has a variety of loads shooting sub-MOA. It will be accompanying me to Vancouver Island in a couple of months for black bear. I'll likely carry a load with 225 grain Partitions that are giving me 2250 fps, although I have a good load with 225 grain Sierras that yield 2350 fps.

There is another Hawkeye chambered in 35 Whelen that should be here any day. I've already sold my Remington Classic chambered in that calibre, so I'm hopeful that it shoots as well as the 358 and that some of the loads I worked up for my previous rifle will work equally well.

What rifle(s) are you working with that are yet unblooded?

Any plans for using those newer (to you) rifles in this coming year?

Unblooded:

25-06 Ruget 77 VT...Just bedded in a non-pig sporter stock... 110 AB's

356 Win 94...200 gr Flex Tip Hornies at 2400 fps

30-30 Marlin 160 Flex Tips at 2350 fps

30-378 Accumark MKV 200 AB's at 3275 or so

270 WBY Ultralight 130 AB's at 3350 fps

378 WBY MKV Load TBD.......

Now as far as calibers go .... then the 378/270/Bees and the 25-06 have been blooded but not in these particular guns.
I have shot game with a 358 but not a 356 and nothing ever with the 30-30....wifey got me that one! 8)

POP,

I'm really interested to hear a report on how the Flex-tips work in your 356. I certainly have had great success with the 220 grain Speers and with the 250 grain Kodiaks. The rifles are easily a 250 yard proposition, but the Flex-tips may just be the ticket for deer and black bear. I imagine they would work quite well on speed goats as well.

I approaching the point where if I really want to blood all the rifles I have that will have to start hunting out of state. Oregon does not have the opportunity to shoot multiple deer, unless you are lucky enough to draw an antlerless (everywhere else it would be a doe) tag. And because I have basically said that I'm not going to hunt Western Oregon anymore (too wet, too steep, too overgrown with underbrush, but mostly too many yahoo flatlanders from the Portland area) that cuts down my opportunities on years I don't draw an Eastside tag.

I envy you guys in the Southeast for your ability to get more than one deer tag. Not that that would make my luck any better.

And while I'm glad that Oregon doesn't have the feral hog problem that a lot of states have, I would like to be able to hunt them without going on a multiple-driving-day road trip. I have been mulling over heading to the Cali bay area for a wild hog hunt... that looks to be the closest place to go.

the 44 redhawk and the latest 300 savage model 99. the remington 700 22" 308 needs some more field work. the rest have done lots of work. blood is just pouring out of a few guns in the safe, may be time for some low tech hunting.

My unblooded list:

7mmRUM
338RUM
375RUM

But that will change soon. Look out piggies here I come!!!!!

POP,

Now I'm thoroughly embarrassed. I not only read that thread, but I commented on it. Thanks.

My son and I both have some bloodin to do. My new #1 7MM RM and the Ruger M77MKII 300 winni I gave him has never drawn blood yet. Lookin to fix that with gregs help this year.

It is good especially for kids and people new to hunting to be able to kill 3 does a day and 3 bucks per year where I hunt. It also helps the hunters for the hungry cause as well. I donated 2 deer this year, and put 2 deer and an elk in the freezer.

I think today would be a good evening to take the 338RUM out equipped with some 225 TSXs (my CA bullet) possibly get some piggie blood on it figuratively (spelling??) speaking.

Oh! and my daughter needs to kill a squirrel or something(neighbors cat) with her new cub T .22!

JD,

I just got reacquainted with my T-bolt this past fall when I took it hunting for prairie chicken and grouse. I had forgotten how really fun a rimfire can be. Good for your daughter, and I certainly wish her success in her hunt for the wily squirrel.

Lets see this could be a long list I'll include the actions I have them built on.

.375 Ruger M70
.35 Whelen M1903
.358 Win Savage 99
.8mm-06 VZ-24
.300 H&H P17
.30-06 FN
.30-40 1896 SPFLD
.280 GNR Encore Pistol
7mm-08 Encore Pistol
6.5X55 M96
.25-06 Zastava

Looks like I got some hunting to do!

Taylorce1,

Sounds like a busy spring and fall for certain.

DrMike, did your screws for your t-bolt rust out? Mine did. Thats my only unblooded rifle because its in pieces.

No rust issues, Russ, but the finish on the wood is certainly soft. It did not take much to mar the finish. My T-bolt does shoot very well, however. I am able to take grouse consistently to 60 yards. Head shots are not a serious problem with the rifle, provided I have a steady rest. That would be a bummer to have a rifle that was in pieces.
