Here are a couple pictures of Jeff's rifles, I think he will pop in and tell us what they are, but he asked me to post them up. Pretty nice bunch of rifles. Scotty

Jeff,

Tell us what cartridges these are chambered in and what loads you've developed. They certainly look as if they could be effective.

I imagine he will pop up shortly guys. He does have some really nicely built hardware for sure. He is truely a practitioner of the sport of LR shooting. Plus, he is a heckuva great guy, always willing to share his experience with ya. I just try to listen when he speaks. Scotty

Scotty,

Thanks for posting for Jeff.

Jeff,

Looking forward to you joining in and sharing with us. I am thinking the rifle on the right with the box magazine is a 338 Lapua.

Doing any competition shooting with any of those rigs?

Long-range prone? F-class? Benchrest? Tactical comps?

They look great. You've got a tidy sum wrapped up there in steel & glass. Nice rigs.

I have shot a few tactical comps "known distance and time limit" problem is my job. I work for the railroad with wed-thursday off. In the summer its extremely hard to get time off on weekends. I am more into the tactical matches than the group game for the fact that I like the hit or miss and move on to another target, condition and correction scenario. I think that levels the playing field a bit more for the reason a guy with a entry level rifle and great wind assessment can handily beat a guy with top shelf gear that doesn't have a clue.
Thanks for the compliment on the guns and glass guy.

Understand. You might like conventional NRA prone matches then, or F-class prone. The shooters get 20 minutes to shoot 20 rounds for score, but the target is pulled and scored between each shot, so wind and mirage change, and change, and change... Conventional prone is shot with sling-support only, yes there's a class for rifles with scopes although many competitors use sights. F-Class shoots a more demanding target, but bipods or rests are used. The F-class format is the the same; the target is pulled between shots, for twenty rounds. Both are shot for score, not for group size - although obviously if a shooter keeps pounding the bullets into the X ring, he's going to score well and have one heck of an impressive "group."

Each competitor gets three strings of fire, twenty shots each. It's actually pretty demanding. Ranges vary, I've seen those matches held at 300, 500, 600 and 1,000 yards.

The "tactical" matches are usually more fun - although I've a few bones to pick with the way some of them are run.

Believe me, I understand about working weekends - do a lot of that myself - and it does make competition very tough to do. For a number of years I was pretty serious about my NRA competitions and somewhat about the tactical comps, but now if I've got a weekend off I'd rather spend it fishing, hunting, hiking or skiing with my family, so it's been a while since I shot a match.

Regards, Guy

f class sounds like fun but like you i am a hunter first and pursue that foremost, both archery and rifle hunting. the matches i have been to have been informal but fun. ive raced motards motocross roadraced and love to compete but time is limited living and working on a ranch and working for the railroad so i do make my time off conducive to hunting or fishing. `plus i dont get hurt quite as often as i use to either. if any of you guys are in billings anytime feel free to look me up and come shoot.

I have found that the middle of the week is much better for hunting. Many hunters seem to disappear (they have jobs) around that time. When I also worked full time and had to use leave to hunt I would typically work on Fridays and mondays and hunt the rest of the week. Now I can go any time but still push to be out more in mid week than weekends.

What I love most about shooting, is the competition. Not so much against other shooters anymore, as I done that in the past as well. But rather, anytime time out regardless of the firearm used, is the competition to better myself or at least stay in tune, and then one is always shooting against mother nature so it seems.
I have a few people out in that region I want to meet up with someday. Some SW of you a bit, some W. and then NW of you. It certainly would be fun to get together with you as well Jeff. If not for just a cup of coffee, but some time shooting digger's or rock chucks would be great!!

Jeff -
Aren't there any muskies in Montana? My buddy in Glendive catches a ton of walleyes every year in the Fort Peck area.

I will be contacting you next time I am out there as well. First thing will be some shooting lessons from you from what I have seen!
