Reading some comments on another forum and a couple of fellas are talking about using WC872 in the 264WM.They are reporting excellent velocities and accuracy.
Looks like it would be useful in the 7Rem Mag as well.
The problem (in my mind) is that this powder is only available in 8 lb lots and the two places that I see it for sale contradict each other. One says it is a ball powder, the other claims it is a spherical powder.

Both places say use H870 data so they got that part right.

Anybody using this powder for ANY magnum applications and if so what kinda results are you seeing?

Thanks in advance,
Howard

I've not used the powder, but I've considered it for similar purposes. Remember that spherical is the technical term for ball powder, so the two suppliers you looked at are just saying it differently.

Be aware that milsurp powders are usually highly variable in burn rate, so work up carefully. Other than that, it's probably excellent for the 7mmRemMag and similar rounds.

WC872 is a very good, slooooooow burning ball powder. It's slightly slower then WC860, which is on average about 8% slower then H870. WC872 is my favorite powder for 180-200gr bullets in the .300 RUM, but I prefer WC860 in the 7mm STW.

For the 7mm and .264, with their slighly small case capacity, I'd go with the faster WC860, or when If you can get it, the excellent and still slightly faster WC868. WC868 is hard to find, and when you do, it goes fast.

They are also now listing a WC867. I've never used it, and have only hear conflicting reports on it regarding burn rate, nothing crediable at this point. I've yet to see a report of someone shooting it and one of the other out of the same gun, on the same day over a chronograph. Personally I'd like to try it, just on the off chance it turned out to be another WC868.

If you don't want to take the chance on shelling out the money for 8 lbs of powder that you don't know if it will work then just go get you some RETUMBO. I personally know that Retumbo is THE powder for the 264 Win Mag. I have never used it in the 7mm Rem mag but from the data it looks to be a winner also.

We use Retumbo in my brothers 7mm rem mag with the 168 grain berger target vld, it is pushing 3084 fps. very accurate as well.

Never bought 8 lbs of powder for loading rifle ammo at one time, just wanted to get some input from the braintrust here before taking the plunge.
Found out today I get to start loading for a 7STW that my ace compadre just bought.
(There is a 7STW on my horizon too)

Has anybody found this powder to be temp sensitive?Gotta remember that here in N Tx it gets kinda warm.We start load workups in Feb and it can be anywhere from 20 to 60 degrees.Come summer it's 100 everyday and then when next November rolls around it can be anywhere from 20 to 90.

Thanks again for the input.

I've found the slow ball powders to be consistant over a wide variety of temperature ranges. I think I'm on my 4th jug of the 860, never had any problems with it.
