Ok here's my thoughts.

I like 7 mags, however I don't like recoil, barrel life is a plus, 90+ grains of powder is already getting old lol. I can't reach lands and use any bullet as a repeater in this 7 RUM sendero...I don't know if me and her are gonna see eye to eye for much longer...

I would like to push a 160-162 bullet at 3100fps, burn no more then 65-70g of powder, have at least 2000-2500 rounds barrel life, and be able to seat the bullet of my choice 162 amax and 160 AB to the lands and use as a repeater.

What are your guys thoughts on building a 7 rem mag on a rem 700 long action with a 30" bbl? Think its about as good as a guy can get for an all around reach out and touch em cost effective 7mm mag to 1K.

I don't mind heavy rifles, not a real concern here. A shooter is however...

Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Jorey, while I really like the 7RM, the 7WSM will do that all day long. I get 3075 with the 162 Amax out of my Model 70 7WSM easily. Shorter case, no belt and the way Winchester chambers their WSM's, you have alot of room to reach out and touch the lands and still function through the magazine. I did it just before I left, since you were hammering so hard on the Amax's. I ran mine out to 2.950" I think. Maybe a touch longer, I was about .010" off the lands and it shot well, with virtually no load work up.

I am with you, the big 7's are cool and all, but I think the 7RM, 7 WBY and 7WSM run just about the same with less powder.

I am running 67 grains of RL22 to get 3075 with the Amax's and 3090 with the AB's. I could push harder, but they are plenty accurate for me and the speed is fine for a 24" tubed rifle.

I think you are on to something. I don' even think you would have to run a barrel that long to get the speeds you are talking about, easily. I really don't think it would be a big trick to get 3100 out of my rifle with the Amax's, just didn't have time to mess with it.

Jorey, here is what I come up with for a 7WSM with a 26" barrel, loaded to 65K, with an OAL length of 2.900". In all of my WSM Model 70's, I can go up to a little 3.00" in order to get to the rifling..

So, to me, looking at the data, with QL, it seems like a 26" barrel would REALLY run all of the speed you wanna get and you wouldn't have to push them horribly hard, everything from RL22 (and slower) on up looks excellent in my book. If you could get your hands on any N570 or the new RL33, well, I think you would really have all the 7mm you want and not have to burn 90+ grains of powder trying to do it, which should assist with your wanted barrel life.

I will say this, the 7RM and 7WSM's are some awesome performers when loaded right. I can't see needing much more than they will give. Plus, the 7WSM is REALLY easy to load for, no belt, SUPER tough cases and just a very accurate cartridge. It was a sleeper to me. I didn't really have much desire to have one, but once I started loading for it, I saw the light.

Another cool bullet for you to check out might be that 180 Berger as well. DF has had cool luck with them in his rifles so it stands to reason, it might be a good one as well.

I think you are on the right track though. The big jugged 7mm's really need the longer 28-30" tubes to make them shine, at least in my eyes. The smaller 7's do it with less barrel length, recoil, and powder.

set the rum back and rechamber with a short throat, shoot surplus ball powder, you'll get 1000-1100 rounds before another setback, and shoot it cheaper than a wsm using extruded powders. as for recoil, get a brake, my 7 AM has 550 rounds downrange, I'm just to the point of being just off the lands from erosion. Its never been shot hot and has strictly been fed wc872 which I bought years ago for 4 bucks a pound.

Check out this great 7mm WSM in the article over on 6mmBR.com: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek064.html

And yes, 3000 - 3100 fps with a 160 class bullet is certainly possible, safely and with accuracy, from the good old 7mm Rem mag too - even with a normal 24" - 26" barrel. Think RL-22.

I know what you mean about the RUM. Several years ago I tried the .300 RUM for a few months. Sold it and went with the .300 WSM, and I'm happier. Some folks like 90+ grains of powder and all the commotion that goes with it, some don't.

Best of luck on your project! Guy

The 7RM and 7WSM are ballistic twins. Either will meet your expectations handily. If you want to be slightly different, the 7 WBY will meet your expectations without burning down the barn. FWIW, you'll gain ~100 fps with the extra inches when contrasting a twenty-six inch barrel and a thirty inch barrel.

Have you shot it yet regardless of seating depth?
She shot in the .3's for me with Hornady 162's.

I sure don't want to give away any secrets, lol but I have been planning on building a custom rifle and have been researching a few options in the 284 cal. Before you decide on anything just google 7MM practical and have a read. I am leaning towards this or a stw , the one thing with the practical is the reamer lets the smith set the throat wherever you decide . I am doing my build back asswards I bought the mark 4 6.5x 22 x 50 first now have to build a rifle that will complement the scope. Lol

Scotty,

That is some great G2. Thanks for sharing.

I've been out 3 different times now trying to get the 160 AB/retumnbo load to go under MOA...its hanging right around MOA and slightly larger.

Shot 3 different loads yesterday all at 93g, but seated at 3.650", 3.630" and 3.610" all at 300 yards. Still putting 2 close well under MOA, but throws one out bad everytime. The best group was 3.650" for 3.5" group...

I may try some H1000 and some RL25 with these 160 ABs just to see if it prefers one of those powders over retumbo.

Thinking about it tho, the 160 AB load was gonna be my 300 yard and under bullet so MOA will work in all reality.

Need to get some 162 amaxs and see what she does with them, that will be final answer on whether she stays or goes.

I planned on braking this 7 RUM if I can get it shoot way I want first, just don't wanna put any money into it right now. Surplus powder sounds like decent idea but don't you have to have a summer/winter load? It can get 100 degrees here in summer quite often and then be in the teens or 20's in winter.

Well maybe I'd like 3200fps with 160 bullet, but I don't want the powder consumption and barrel life to go with it.

I don't mind the 7 WSM, I just prefer the normal long skinny cases, they tend to feed better. I had a 7 WSM in a cheap win shadow and it was a helluva rifle/cartridge, out did my 7 RM in velocity and was very accurate out of a 300 dollar rifle believe it or not.

7mm WBY wouldn't be bad, but I'm kinda cheap when it comes to brass...I don't wanna pay $2+ a piece for brass, that's crazy to me.

Was also thinking 280 AI with a 28"-30" bbl would probly do what I'm looking for as well.

I have hard time seeing a 7 RM do 3100fps safely/accurately with a 160. My win model 70 has 26" bbl and I'm using 70g retumbo with 162 amax and I'm only getting 2925fps. That's dam close to max load in books and my rifle as well, and I'm not even at 3000?? I dunno...that's why I'm curious to know about the 30" bbl if anyones done it.

Would like 3100 to be where it just wants to shoot lights out and not be hard on brass if that makes sense now. I don't wanna push the 7 RM to the line to get 3100 as I'm finding now accuracy usually isn't as good when your red lining stuff.

Keep it coming guys.

Jorey,

I've not had great success with 7RUMs. All shot acceptably, but not spectacularly. MOA was reasonably easy to obtain, but getting better could be a challenge. It is possible that I've just been unfortunate in the rifles that were handed to me, but that is my experience.

You could get that out of a .280AI with a lot less powder (using 7828 SSC) with 160 grain bullets and not cook out your throat with magnum loads.

A 160 AB with 72.5 gr of H1000 dis 3125 fps from my 7mm rem mag 24" barrel FS REM 700.

I have a barrel ordered to do a 7-300win but I'm looking for closer to 3200fps with 162 Amax's in a 26" barrel. It will be a packing gun for deer hunting and not a target gun so the barrel life isn't as critical but I would bet 1500 rounds of accuracy life is do-able. It uses 70-75grs of powder. If you seat the 162's to the base of the neck the OAL is about 3.60" which will function through a 3.68" mag box on a Remington. BTW it's basically the same as the 7mm practical that has already been mentioned.

I'm using a Schneider #5 (I cancelled the Obermeyer I had ordered because it had been 6 month when I was told 1-2 months and ordered a Schneider. 6 weeks) on a SS 700 action with either a Greybull stock or a HS stock and a Leupold 4.5x14 with elevation turret. With my luck it will want to shoot 180's instead and I'll have to do a Wyatt mag box for it.

Jorey, give 7828 or RL25 a try in your 7RM. RL25 worked really well in my 264 with the 140's, I gotta think it would be as good or better with the 7RM and 160 or heavier.

In the 7mm Rem Mag, IMR 7828 SSC at 66 grains with a Magnum Fed 215 Match primers with give a 160 gr Partition bullet about 3080 fps at an instrumental distance of 15 feet which if you add the 15 feet lost distance velocity back in, is as close to 3100 as one can get. I am sure that the WSM can equal this number easily. This is with a 24 inch barrel in a Mauser Custom.

I have been shooting this combination for at least 10 years and used the old surplus H-4831 for 40 years before that. This load will not shoot out a barrel particularly fast as I have put probably 1500 rounds through my Mauser and it is still very accurate and shows no throat erosion that I can see.

Jorey,

My next 7mm will be a new cartridge called the 7mm rogue. Pretty much it is a 7mm mashburn improved. Much less powder used than a STW or RUM and great velocity and accuracy. Travis from RBROS has developed the cartridge and its pretty interesting. Travis builds amazing rifles and is a great guy. Also wont need a 30" barrel. Setup to work in a standard length Rem LA.
