What are your thought about picking the bullet weight for a Noslert BT and powder based upon the ft/sec as it leaves the muzzle. Nosler recommends no faster than 3200 ft/sec for best performance. I estimate that 3300 out of the muzzle would probably equate to 3200 by the time it impacts a white tail deer at 50 yds. I do not expect to shoot closer than 50 yds. The bullet weight could be 130 or 140 and the powder must provide a good grouping but 3300 out of the muzzle.

I used 130 AB. BT is too soft for this velocity. With R-19 I had no problem get 3300 fps but 24 inch tube.
With 140 AB you should get 3200 FPS. I would use this one. Better BC and density. RL-22 might work.
Good Luck,

Ok.?.

You state that you don't expect to shoot a deer closer than fifty yards but you are asking about performance at fifty yards.

Do you project on having most of the shots at 50 yards? Your question is too vague for me to give you a good answer.

If you are just trying to hit 3300 fps with a 130 or 140 bullet that isn't a problem whatsoever. As far as accurate too...nobody can tell you that one because every rifle likes to eat a little bit different.

I would suggest trying Winchester supreme 780. You certainly will hit the velocity mark and it will meter about as good as any powder can.

Good luck

Sorry about being vague. I expect to shoot at leats 50 yds and could be 500 yds.

Something about that kind of velocity potential just screams heavy for caliber... 150 grn BT, 160 grn PT. Sure you won't hit 3,300, but if shots may reach 500 yards, it would be worth the extra BC.

I'm shooting a 26" barreled 270Wby, with velocities similar to what you're seeking (actually, I'm getting 3420fps at .75moa accuracy). I'm shooting the 130gr E-Tip. I suggest you take a strong look at it, too. I've told and retold this story, so I won't bore you with it, but on a good sized buck in the 2010 season, I had two shots (first shot was angling more than I thought, and didn't take out enough of the vitals). First shot was at ~175yds through the shoulder and out the chest, half-dollar sized exit hole. Second shot was at 25yds, straight into the chest at the base of the neck. That one rode all the way down the right side of the spine through heavy bone and muscle, and exited just about 2" to the right and slightly above where the tail met the rump. Again, half-dollar sized exit. I'd trust this bullet from the muzzle out to at least 400-500yds, based on what I've seen and my known velocities out at those distances. You should consider them for sure. BT's are too fragile for shots at 50yds at 3200fps. Trust me on that.

I'm with Gene here. With a 28" barrel, you should easily get 3200 out of a 150 BT. I run RL22 and get an easy 3130 without hammering on it too hard. The 150 BT is a tough bullet and would be a great bullet for lots of shooting as well. Good luck, sounds like a cool set up.
