Forgot to add one of my personal favorites, a real odd duck. If you really want a new rifle, heres an interesting one that will get some attention at the range and will no doubt give you hours of wonderment looking at the machinists wet dream that is the straight pull swiss action. Swiss Karabiner 31 (k-31). They are currently available surplus for around $300 and are sure to increase a lot in the near future. They are relatively rare and built with such quality and shoot so darn good they are developing a bit of a cult following. The 7,5X55 round they shoot is ballistically similar to the .308. It uses standard 30 cal bullets and most powders suitable for 30-06 are apropo for the swiss. The standard 174 gr. GP11 ball load has a bit of a bite but with a 155 Nos BTHP they are very easy on your shoulder due to the weight of the rifle and the ample wood in the wrist area of the stock. Great rifle to shoot around the range with and enter a ViMbar match. Very interesting trigger pull with a long light first stage and short crisp second stage. Feels like an accutrigger. Did I mention THEY SHOOT! The only negative is they are expensive to glass. You'll need a custom mount for around $150 to mount a scope.
