What power would you scope this with? Shoots 1/2" @ 100 easy. Prairie dogs on the menu.

Not much info to go on but I'll throw out a 4-12 Vortex Diamondback with AO for a value pick.

Burris Ballistic Plex in a 3-9x40 or step up to the 4.5-14x44 if you like more X's.

Well this is it. A savage walking varminter with a medium heavy barrel.

...I'd push up into the 6-18X, certainly capable of 300yds., possible 400, but wind drift is going to start to be pretty extreme. I've got 3 of the Leupold 6-18X VX-2's, the Redfields look pretty good for the money, but I'm not real fond of the oversized eyepieces...

Leupold fixed 12x

You won't hear me complain about a fixed power Leupold with two 6x36's and an 8x40 :)

40-44mm objective lens on a 1" variable that tops out in the 12-15x range. I'd go Leupold, probably, but others would work as well.

3x-9x 40mm (it's what I have on my .17HMR p-dog killer), or 4x-12x for 300yd. shots.

Fotis,
If your like me(middle aged eyes) I like as much magnification I can get without getting touchy on the eye box. I'm running a Bushnell 6500 2.5x16 on my 17Hornet and a Nikon 6x18 Buckmaster on the 17HMR. I just got back from shooting squirrels in the high desert. Aiming at squirrel heads poking out of alfalfa fields at 200-300yds would be dang tough with anything less than 12x. The method I use is to scan at 4x or 6x then dial up when I'm on target. I like to aim at their beady little eyes - makes for a nice bullseye. The fireworks are more impressive on the higher powers.

Fotis,

I would think a VX-3 4.5-14 would be just about perfect. Fixed power, I would look at FX-3 12X40mm.
