I''m on the home stretch (10 days) of picking up my 280 Rem and I was wondering which brass to get. I like nickel plated and both RP and Winchester has it.
Is there a preference. I know Nosler makes the best but not nickel plated(I don't think).
Thanks
Greg

For my hunting loads, I primarily use Norma. However, Nosler may get a nod shortly.

I don't care for nickel brass in bottleneck cases, but if you like it, I don't think there's a nickel's worth of difference between the two. Pardon the pun. I have seen the plating flake off around the shoulder junction, but your experience may be different.

Greg,

Everything else being equal, I generally opt for Winchester over Remington in brass. Much of the Remington brass I've worked in recent years is less ductile, more brittle, which isn't always a good thing. However, I still prefer Norma.

Same here Greg, I run nickel WW brass in my 270WSM and like it alot. It has held up really well for me. Saying that, if I make new loads, I will try to zero in on some Nosler brass. The price is worth the money. At least to me. It is consistent and already prepped. The 264WM and 338WM have been shooting the Nosler brass for awhile and it really has worked excellent. Scotty

I've been using WW nickel cases in my .280 and have been very happy with them. I bought a bag of 50 and have only used 25 of them so far. I believe they've been reloaded five or six times now and they are going strong. One case started flaking almost immediately and I've had one split neck. The rest have been fine. I recently bought a second bag just to have on hand, as I don't see them being available at $22/50 for very long.

I've used the WW nickle brass. I do believe it is not the same finish that gave people some trouble a few years back. I've not noticed the flaking that once plagued the plated brass. Granted, I've only reloaded about five times, so far.

The new nickel cases are flash nickel and are too thin nickel to flake off like the old ones did. I use W-W .280 Nickel cases and have been using them since "Supreme" ammo came out with no issues with flaking on these cases in years.

W/W is what I ordered per the feedback. I just have had better luck with Nickel plated brass. They seem more consistent in velocities and of course they clean up easier.
Thanks everyone
Greg

I've a bunch of Winchester nickle brass in 7WSM and Remington in .25-06. I like to stand in my garage and stare at it an repeat, over and over, "Ooh, shiny!" Just kidding. Sorta. I do like the nickle stuff, but I won't really go out of my way to find it. I am, on Scotty's recommendation, going to give Nosler brass a try in .300 H&H, .300 WSM and .300 RUM. And I'm arguing with myself over whether to give some Lapua brass in '06 a shot (Sorry, bad pun.)

Kurt,

You'll appreciate the Lapua brass. I don't know that it makes one a better shot; but it is good brass that is quite ductile.

Greg,

I have always used R-P brass in the 280 Rem, as well as the 280 AI and have not had any problems with it.
If you want to step up, go with the Nosler brass.

I have some Lapua brass cases and they are very high quality but also are pretty expensive as are Norma cases.

I have really became a fan of the Nosler brass as of late. It seems to be of very high quality, is ready to shoot when you get it and just holds up really well. I started with 20 cases for the 264WM and got 7 loads out of them before the primer pockets let go. Mind you, these were for load work and some of them had some hot charges in them that loosened primer pockets prematurely. I believe now that I have sane loads for them, I will get case life out the wazzooo.. I have not have a split neck, case head separation or any other failure. I just chucked the last of the 20 as they pockets were getting too loose, but I am sold. Same goes for the 338. Very good life and just seems to last. I know I will be shopping for more as it becomes available. Scotty
