i have a nef singleshot .223 that likes w748 real well. with 40gr and 50gr. bt's and vmax's it shoots under 3/4" usually. than run 3350fps and 3100fps. i would like to try a powder that might give me a little better velocity. i've tried h335 but the accuracy and velocity suffer. any suggestions.

My NEF Single 223 liked 25.5gn of Varget for the 50gn BT. Sorry, no velocity as I started using my 204 instead and didn't chrono the 223.

My 700 also likes 25.5 to 26.0 grains Varget and 25.0 grains Benchmark with the 50 grain BT.

Some people have said it is harder to find a "bad" powder for the .223 than a good one. Over the years, I have used Accurate Data 2200, 2230, 2460, 2015BR, SRB-118, Hodgdon H-4198, H-4895, H-335, H-414, IMR-4895, 4064, Reloder 15, and Win 748. I am currently using Ramshot TAC and plan to try Accurate 4064 just to see how it shoots. The only powders out of those that I didn't like were H-4198 (hard to meter, mediocre velocity and accuracy in my rifle) H-414 (low velocity, really too slow burning for the .223 case) and IMR-4064 (okay accuracy and velocity, but didn't run smoothly in the powder measure). I could have been happy with any of the rest, but I like the Ramshot TAC because it is accurate, provides good velocity and seems to foul less than other powders I have used. My other favorites would be Accurate 2015 and Accurate Data Powder 2200.
Oc course, the only way to know for sure what your rifle will like is to try it. What I am saying is, chances are good, if you use one of the above powders (or even other recommended powders like H-322, Accurate 2520, Reloder 12 or one of the Vihta Vuori powders) you will be happy with the results.

My AR-15 likes Varget with 60gr. V-Max, and my Rem. 700 BDL Varmint likes W748 with 50gr. BST.

O the surpluss side, mine like both wc844 (which is made for the current ball rounds) and WC846 (it's slower twin made for the 7.62).

Good thread......I have a new 223 and my first loads will be with 55 grain Ballistic Tip bullets and Varget powder. I'm hoping it is an accurate powder in the 223 because I use it for my 45-70 with great results. It will give me a good dual-use excuse to buy a keg if it turns out to be an accurate load. I will also try the W-748 I have on hand.
