Which rifle would you prefer in another caliber??

Sometimes we get all tangled up in all kinds of cartridges and especially the new and exotic or unique cartridges.

I can think of only a few through the years I have not owned like the 264Win mag, 405Win, 338-06 but most of them I have owned at one time or another and loaded for.

There is one I have gone to from time to time and do wonder why I left it when I had such success with it on the three different times in my life I loaded, shot and hunted with it. It is not some fancy new cartridge at all and in fact it has lasted so long that we are to use to it maybe and over look it.

I think I would like a 300Win mag. I always had great luck with the one and the cartridge never presented me with any issues or surprises if I did my job right at the reloading bench. I could always get it to shoot great with plenty of power to do whatever I wanted it to do and it never failed me on game whether up close or when I took very long shots.

Really when I think about it, it is one of the most all around cartridges out there and in my opinion is much more accurate than the 300WSM which could not out preform my reloads in velocity or accuracy.

The only cartridge I would pick above it if I was limited to one cartridge and rifle (which thankfully I am not) would be the 30-06 but not by much.

If I do get another rifle ( I said if!!!! ) it will be a 300Win mag in a control fed receiver bolt action.

It is hard to beat the 300 Win Mag. I would like to get a big 35, maybe a 358 Norma or something along those lines. I also want to get a 375 either the H&H or the Ruger version. Eventually I will get them, just time and money, got plenty of times, need to acquire the money! Scotty

I do need to wave just a bit - If for some reason a 416Wby Mark V comes my way at a good price, the 300win would quickly be forgotten. I regret letting few rifles go in my life but one of the biggest was letting my 416Wby go.

I adore my 416 bee!!!!!!!!!!!!! First I die then it goes!!!!!!!!!

Now, POP, out of curiosity, at what distance did you drop that speed goat?

The above was 363. This one was dropped at 454 yards. 330 GS custom at 3100 fps

That looks like incredible fun. Does your son shoot it? The way he handles that 500 would make me suspect that he would have little trouble with the rifle.

POP,

That is so cool. Congratulations on taking time to raise your son, giving him ample opportunity to learn safety and to spend time with Dad.

I dont hink I could change any of my rifles. I'll just wait until I can afford one and buy the next caliber I want.
Probably be another #1 though!

POP, you are no good, I just knew you would post those pictures again after I made the comment about regretting letting my 416Wby go.

lothar 8 twist, that should be a great barrel for heavier stuff. Now we just need to beg a little bit more for a 6.5mm 150-155 grain CC or better still AccuBond. With a BC in the .7's It would be a coyote's worst nightmare in the hands of a skilled rifleman.

JT.

Berger has an excellent 140 grain VLD hunting bullet that has a B.C of .612. I plugged this number on my Ballistic programs and you'll have a bullet that will remain supersonic to 1500 yards at a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps. The remaining energy is enough to clobber deer size game at that distance. All this can be achieved with no more than 50 grains of powder. The little cartridge will run circle around my 308 and will give my 300 Weatherby a run for the money.

This rifle like Berger VLD 140's, but I've never tested it on game. It's a Savage 111 with a Pac Nor 31" 8.5 twist poly rifled 264 win with a short throat and .290? neck. I've added a Rifle Basix trigger and need to loctite the set screws in place, this winter it should be getting a artic camo paint job as well. The only other thing it neesd is either some M1 turents on the fixed 20X or a more adjustment friendly scope.

I hate to admit it, but I haven't given that rifle any serious range time since spring  . I really didn't like the factory trigger and just got the Riflebasix trigger about 2 weeks ago and have been really busy since.
I think it was running about 3125-3130FPS. The rail is a 20 MOA EGW rail.

I'm with you bullet; depending on how taxes turn out, there may be another M70 that finds its way into my cabinet so chambered. If I could pick another caliber it would be either the .308 Norma or 300 H&H.

First things first though. There is a Model 7 in my not too distant future...
