I doubt you will burn the barrel out in any reasonable time, unless you abuse the rifle. If you are going to discard the barrel, it makes no difference which you buy as you will cut your new barrel to length. Pick the least expensive and build it now. Someone will give you $100 for the barrel off the new rifle, in any case.

The donor for my rifle was an Ultimate Shadow (not SS though)...I'm tempted to advise against shooting the donor rifle...I did that, and ended up not rebarreling it because it was just too good to waste...so my 280 AI is still a 30-06, and will stay that way.

AJ,

If you are going to do a build, look for a used rifle. The gunsmith will put it together just the way you want it. If you want to go new, the Extreme Weather SS would be a good one.

I agree with the advice above. (Excellent advice, as always on this forum).

I did however replaced my barrel on my .300 after 2500 rounds, (just to be safe) Although, Just before I switched the barrel, I shot it in a local F-class shoot, and it was still shooting 7" at 1,000 yards. Good enough for me.

AJ,
Pawn shops are your friend buddy. There's some great stuff in there. I found a used pre-64 in -06 at an amazing price. Also, found a cheap one at Cabela's that looked to have had a pretty rough life, but the action was still good to go. It's pretty sound advice to buy used if you're going to rebarrel or put it in different stock. It's also good advice not to shoot the donor. My beater pre-64 .270 that I got on the cheap for an action way back when puts 140 ABs into 3/4" all day every day. It's tough to bring yourself to rebarrel a rifle that shoots under an inch!

Find an old Classic if your wanting to build AJ. Might be able to find one for a song you can build upon. I have a couple of them and they have all been very good to me. Which cartridge did you decide upon?

30-06. Itll do everything I want, and ammo availability is another plus. Every shop has had it throughout this "shortage".

If anyone can locate a CRF SS model at a decent price, give me a shout.

Oh man, you just opened a whole can of worms! Your going to have rifle ads flying at you! HA!

The 30-06 will be a good one AJ. Your right about ammo, it is everywhere and has been. I was really surprised to see so much big game ammo at my local walmart. 243, 25-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win, 300WSM, 7-08, 270, 308, 30-06, 270WSM, and a bunch of others. Really good to see it hitting the shelves again.

Sportsman's has a new 300 Win Mag Super Grade and it's been on the shelf for about 5 days now and it's the first Winchester they have had in 2 months 1099.00 and the action is very smooth  I enjoy playing with it since they sold the 460 & the 300 Weatherby Deluxe's that I thought they would never sell ! I think a RC Mark V would be a sweet pick up

That 300 Win Mag Super Grade sounds pretty nice Terry. How does the wood look on it?

It's not as great as that JOC rifles wood but for 1099.00 I have issues not playing with it as it gotta be the smoothest bolt action I have every worked ! Hard for me to only have 2 rifles in same caliber even if they are not both BEE's   I say the 300 Win Mag will be the next 30-06 and that they will become very hard to find in coming years

All of the Florence Winchesters I own are so smooth that I sometimes have to open the bolt just to assure myself that I chambered a cartridge. They are making a great product down there.

Well I put my two cents in on this one already over on 24hrcampfire, guess I might as well pipe in here as well. Buy the Ultimate Shadow and order a McMillan edge stock for it. The B&C stock on the EW is just too thick through the wrist an forearm unless you have extremely large hands. The extra money the EW goes for isn't worth it for flutes and the B&C stock. If the US feels unwieldy with the 24" barrel you can always have it cut back to 22".

I am going exactly that route. Either a used SS M70 classic or the new US put into a Manners will be it for now.
