Gents,

Are any of you able to tell me the neck thickness of Winchester 30-06 brass? Or could someone mic (measure) a 30-06 round of theirs loaded with Winchester brass?

My 30-06 has a 0.337 neck. Just trying to figure out if I use Win brass if I'll need to neck turn. I have to neck turn Lapua brass, but Nosler and Norma brass is fine without neck turning.

Thanks!
v/r
Joel

Joel, I've never even thought about the need to turn the necks of my 30-06 brass and I have used just about all brands commercial and military. I still have about 6 boxes of Federal factory ammo sitting on the self when ever I wear out the brass I'm currently loading.

Just checked factory ammo and its .334.
Did some digging and found some unloaded 1x fired shells. The wall thickness in the neck area hovers around. 0135".
In short...I don't think you'll find brass LESS likely than win for needing turning.

My 30-06 has a 0.337 neck instead of the SAAMI 0.340 neck. Lapua is the only brand I have to neck turn. A loaded Lapua round out of my latest batch of ammo would be about 0.338 if unturned. Fine for SAAMI, but won't fit in my 30-06.

I also own the reamer for my 30-06. One could ask a very valid question why I chose a 0.337 neck instead of a 0.340 neck...

About the same thickness as Norma and Nosler brass. I will probably give the Win brass a try.

That neck thickness matches what I see in win 308 brass. I have a fairly tight 708 factory chamber in the neck area and being 708 brass is hard to find I use win brass to downsize w/no troubles w/neck thickness
Some say win brass isn't what it used to be but w/the extra room in win brass, the thinner necks, and what I call proper annealing from the factory its my favorite of the cheaper American brands.

Why?

Measured some 30-06 rounds I had in Win brass. .333" give or take a couple of ten thousandths.

Why?

I ask myself that question pretty often. The short version is it's a tighter fit for standard brass, like Nosler, Norma, etc. But I pretty often use Lapua brass, and I would prefer a 0.340 neck for the Lapua. Sometimes I think I would prefer a 0.340 neck, other times I'm glad for the 0.337 neck.

I selected the reamer more because it has a 1.5 degree leade instead of the standard 3.0 degree leade angle for a SAAMI 30-06 reamer. The 1.5 degree leade is the same as the leade angle of the 308 Win.

All in all she shoots well, but she's a bit fussy with 180 grain bullets. 150/155s shoot lights out without much effort at all.

Now I have 2 30-06s chambered with the same reamer, though one of them still needs a stock. I should be able to use the same brass for both.

Joel, I didn't realize it was a custom chamber, I was thinking it was factory.

Sorry, I should have been more clear!

I knew I would have to neck turn some kinds of brass. It's not too big a chore, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
