The military and law enforcement agencies use "first person shooter" (FPS) video games to cut training time and improve outcomes. Studies have shown that FPS video games train users to think tactically (weapon & cover use) and improve hand-to-eye coordination for putting sights/rounds on target. Personally, I like those games that eliminate the moral dilemma by not using human targets. Aliens work fine.

The reticence of the average person to shooting another human is well documented. That's why law enforcement using human looking targets. The video, or whatever it's called, scenarios where they use actors, actual humans, and role play scenarios are good at helping to overcome that reticence.
Even in World War II the military was doing things to condition the shooters to actually shoot the enemy. That's why subjects are "dehumanized" by using various terminology. While everybody had a gun not everybody fired in the heat of battle.

I share your pain on finding places to shoot this time of year. As others mentioned, see if there are any ranges that may be indoors or maybe indoors that open to an outdoor target. We have a range about 20 miles from my house that we shoot 300 yards every other Saturday. You are shooting prone with whatever furniture you want to use (bipod, SEB, Farley, sling, etc...and rear bag) at an electronic target 300 yards away. There is a monitor screen next to your station that shows the impact right after you shoot. No one has to sit out in the elements and pull targets and score for you.

It was a balmy 18 F today so I went to the range and shot a few rounds through a new 6BRX barrel that I need to get ready for the spring. It is amazing how fast you can loose trigger control when you take time off :shock: .

257 Ackley. Are you talking about MTKA game and fish? What's there waiting list like these days. Was going to shoot INT matches there this year, but ran into financial difficulties this spring and couldn't afford the sights for my Schmitt Rubenstein match rifle.

Shoot! Find a nice frozen lake with an unpopulated sandbank, you can drive out and practice your long range shooting. 5 gal or ice cream bucket Ice blocks painted orange or black make good reactive targets.

So I am familiar (understatement...) with the range in Polaris' post above. Not to high jack a thread, but we (at that range) have had long and apparently useless discussions at club meetings about "shooting houses", sound barriers, roofs, shelters etc. we cant come to a concensus. If you all could post some pictures of where or what you shoot from at your club or range in the winter (or summer) that MIGHT help. I will start another thread. Thanks CL

Yes, this is the club. You don't need to be a member to shoot the Saturday events. Look on the calendar for the dates they have coming up. I'm a member of the Elk River Sportsmans Club, so I wouldn't want to be a member there. We will be putting in heated 300 and 600 yard plexiglass buildings to shoot from this next year. Really getting to be a bunch of pansies!

So are those the "INTL free rifle practice" and High power winter league shoots at MPLS rifle club? Never did get the match rifle put together, but it would still be fun to play with the K-31 or Swede at 600 yards.

I was fortunate enough to live very close to gun ranges back in Michigan. I know from living in Colorado I did not like the long 1 hour drive to the Golden Gun Club, so I asked around locally and secured at place fifteen minutes from where I lived to shot and do load development from a Buffalo rancher. If you ask around and maybe offer to trade for a helping hand every now and then Rancher's and Farmers might be willing to help with the cause?

Living in Texas and having to drive three hours to shoot would not be my cup of tea! Living in Montana was off the front porch or down the street after someone put a house on my 350-600 yard range. Here in Idaho the National Forest is so close most people just head out to the woods to shoot.
