I have a few wolves hanging around my hunting spot in the UP of MI.
There are 3 in this photo.

Sure wish I had a tag to fill!

Can you throw out some traps of you can't legally shoot one?

Wish I could. They are protected. I would love to introduce one to a 7mm 150 gr PT.

Several years ago, while hunting in the west, I was shown some wolf tracking-collars, hanging on a highway R/W fence. Not all the locals were happy with the wolf release program.

Wolves are pretty amazing - but - I was happy when they weren't so widespread. I'd love to do some wolf hunting! Still protected here in Washington.

Here's a Washington Coyote I shot some years ago when he was stalking me! I don't think he knew I was a man, as I was proned-out on a rock. He's a full 60" from tip of nose to tip of tail.

That's a good coyote Guy.
Now we just need to get you a good wolf. :)

Dang Jim. Those suckers probably eat a fair amount of venison in an area where there aren't many deer to start with.

Speaking of coyotes....

A few weeks back my young son and I went deer hunting, his first time where he was actually hunting, didn't see any deer but right after dark we headed out.... Just as soon as I stepped out of the blind a whole crew of coyotes sounded off....Roughly 10 of them I'd guess.... And they were CLOSE, and on 3 sides of us (the sides with cover)... The other direction was open field.

I've never seen coyotes behave like that, been around lots of them....I've never seen them be that bold and aggressive towards people.

I killed 3 of them with my Glock 36 before we made it to the truck.... That should tell you just how bold, aggressive, and close they were.

Sorta scared my 8 year old son..... Hell, it sorta scared me, because I had him with me.

I've always been pretty quick to kill coyotes....from now on, none that show themselves to me will survive the encounter.

Since that evening... 7 more have died by other means.

Edited to add:
These weren't particularly large or unusual coyotes... They all weighed around 35-40 lbs... Typical for the area, and appeared healthy.

The worst part of all that is.... I never knew they were there until I stepped out of the blind.... Had no clue.

I'm fairly woods saavy and aware of my surroundings at all times.... But they snuck right up on me.

Lynn- Wow! I thought I was the one who lived where stuff might eat you! Time to vaporize a few of those...

Speaking of wolves, they are not uncommon here....and certainly not protected. I had this one try to sneak in behind me while I was glassing from a ridge top rock pile....he made it to 20' but the .300 got him  . In the 90-100 pound range, which is typical for the area.

+ 1

we have had this discussion before here on the forum. I would dearly miss the wolf. We have the Arctic Wolf also, and they are, to me, just beautiful. The Yukon wolf are more plentiful and troublesome but we protect their dens and then shoot them when they are older and need thinning.

If I EVER make it up to Alaska or the Yukon for a hunt - I'd sure love to add a wolf to the take.

Thinking a big ol' wolf skin would make a mighty fine way to remember a big hunt in the far north.

Just got back from a hunt with my SIL and Noah. Not a single ungulate (though we did find fresh buck tracks made early this morning). What we did find in every valley were wolf packs and coyotes. Never have I seen this many packs in this AO. Time to give some dedicated thinning this winter.

Guy- if you seriously want a wolf, go up north of the Brooks and do a caribou hunt. Very common there and they follow the caribou as they migrate. Pretty decent chances of scoring one and the tags are pretty inexpensive ($50 if I remember right). In the Interior they are still common but usually give folks a wide berth. This was my 5th wolf encounter in 3 years, but the only one with a wolf in rifle range.

Excellent! Caribou would be great!

I think I'm still tough enough for the Brooks....

Once upon a time in a land far, far away a hunter ran across a collared wolf....... That collar was duck taped to an outbound semi's ICC bumper. The hunter sometimes wonders how long the people tracking that wolf took to figure out something wasn't quite right.

Could definitely create some questions among those tracking the beast.
