280 Ackley SAAMI spec chamber pressure confusion...

Most places you find it quoted say the 280 and the 280 Ackley are rated to the same pressure...SAAMI says that is not the case.

See page 6...
http://www.saami.org/specifications_and ... re_CfR.pdf

Hodgdens online data for the AI appears to be loaded very weak as are most others....Noslers online data looks to be good to go.

Just posting for the sake of getting it out there so the data may someday be "right" from all sources....for those that don't want to read, the 280 Ackley is SAAMI spec'd at 65,000 psi....the 280 Remington is 60,000 psi.

The 5K psi doesn't increase velocity as much as you might imagine on that portion of the pressure trace.

The .280 Rem charged wit6h RL22 propelling a 150 ABLR generates a velocity of 3003 fps. For 1.3 more grains, allowing for a 65K psi max chamber pressure, you gain 71 fps. In the real world, that is negligible. Undoubtedly, there is someone who can make a case for the need of an additional 71 fps, but for the overwhelming majority of shooters, it is a non-issue, though few know that it is a non-issue.

I know you're right...

I've just been reading up a little on the Ackley, and noticed most sources stopped way short of MAP...I'm hoping I can stay away from RL 22, lost interest in that powder on a hot day with a 300 WM years ago...

If I can get 2,900 fps with a 160 grain AB...I'll be happy as a kid in a candy store...probably gonna try RL 19, maybe some of that new MR-4000 from Alliant too.

From what I've seen RLs -19 & -22 are about the same with regards to temp issues.

No idea where 7828 ranks in that sense.

This thread is quite helpful; thanks Mike for that posting. Would you be willing to do that same calculation with the 168 gr Custom Comp? I am playing with that one currently in my 22" barreled Win 70 FW.

Good stuff guys keep it coming!

Well crap...I've used it in 243 and didn't notice anything, but different cases cause different behavior.

Wonder if H4831sc could get me there without beating up the brass?

That's the slowest powder on the list that I know for a fact is pretty stable, lol.

Ramshot Hunter?

I LOVE Hunter but from what John Barsness has said it's somewhat temp sensitive. The way I've addressed that in my loading is to try and develop loads that aren't hot, and to do so in warmer weather. Haven't done a ton of shooting of those loads in really hot weather either, but even the most stable powders will react poorly on a 100 degree day when yer shooting in direct sunlight and yer rifle/ammo just came out of a shut-up car.

You're right though; my eye was drawn to H-4831 for that reason. It's easy to get greedy when I see 150 fps more but you're absolutely right when you say 2900 fps would be awesome.

Great info on Ramshot Magnum! Thanks for that! I have some I was thinking about using w/ my 168 gr Custom Comps. Very surprised that it wasn't closer to the top on that velocity chart.

I just emailed Ramshot asking if they had any plans to offer load data on the 280 Ackley...bragged on Magnum and Hunter a little too while I was at it.

Ramshot Hunter?
IMR 7828 is single based so therefore not as temp. sensitive as the double based powders. I can deal with temp. sensitivity, what ended my love affair with RE 22 is the lot to lot variences. Ramshot powders are double based and more temp. sensative than the single based powders. If you want temp. stable powders check the labels, if it says nitrocellulose, its single based, if it says nitroculose and nitroglycerine then its double based. I shoot some double based powders, work up your load in hot weather, then check your velocity, when it gets cold bump your charge up till it matches that velocity, just keep your summer and winter loads segregated. I don't see much difference in them till it gets above 60 degrees.

Norma MRP seems like it would be really good in the 280 Ackley. It is doing really well in my 7mm Rem Mag. I am not sure it is any more stable than RL22, but I am hoping it is a little more consistent across lots of powder. I still use plenty of RL22 though. As long as you know what your working with, it hasn't been troublesome for me and has always smoked H4831 for speed and accuracy.

I think I saw the info you speak of posted somewhere here on the forum...

And after more research I think Magnum is just a little too slow burning for this round....Hunter is just a little too fast for heavy bullets...

Back to the drawing board...

FWIW, Nosler uses MRP in their 280 AI ammunition.
I have used a lot of RL 22 and have not had any temp issues but I do my load development in the summer time.
