Visitor to My Neighbourhood

A young bull visited the neighbourhood this afternoon. I never get tired of the critters wandering through the area. My neighbour told me that I had a couple of mule deer bucks in the yard at two this morning. I wasn't up at that time, though I did get up at four.

From the title I wondered if it was a moose or a bear... Are your Canadian bears up and about yet or still tucked into their dens?

Oh, yeah, the bears are up. The boars are eating the buds off the young trees and finding skunk cabbage in the swampy areas. This was the second young moose I've seen this spring. Mama likely ran him off and he doesn't know that he'll do better out in the bush. He was in good shape--no ticks at all.

How cool! And to think I get annoyed at the deer munching on my arborvitaes. Can't imagine what Bullwinkle would do to landscaping.

They can trim the trees to an amazing extent!

My buddy in Maine had a really nice apple tree (with a fence around it) growing for a few years in the front yard. He took very good care of it and had gotten apples on a couple of occasions. As he does not live in Maine but in New York he drives up once a month and stays for two weeks at a time. Well, he was up last week and when pulling in the front drive found the fence around the tree on the ground and the tree trimmed to the point where he didn't know if it would survive or not. Moose tracks around the tree convinced him who the pruner was.

Yup, they have voracious appetites. They can give a tree or bush a severe pruning in a very short time.
