I'm looking into that cartridge as a just for fun with no specific use. I'm thinking about a 20-22" barrel using a twist between 9-10. Bullets between 90-150gr and possibly 165-168's. Ernie is my guess who'll have 1🤷‍♂️

Started with the 284 Win in the early 90's, center-grip XP-100.
Mine have all been 9T.
I have run from 140's-180's.
The 180's are on my F-Open Rifle (30" barrel).
140's to 168's in 15.75" to 18" barrels.
I had 3 recently, and I am down to 2 right now (Sold a XP-100).
H-4831sc has been the powder I have used in all of them.

We have three of them in the family. Two Savage 99’s and one Winchester 88. If I had the coin I would love to have a custom built on a long action (so high bc bullets could be seated out to 3”). But a .280/.280 AI would serve that purpose just as well.

A great cartridge the .284, way ahead of its time!

Sounds like a fun .284 Win setup. A 20–22" barrel with a 1:9–1:10 twist should comfortably handle 90–160gr bullets, and even 165–168s in some cases depending on the exact bullet length. Should end up pretty versatile for a “just for fun” build. Crossy Road

9T will handle up to 180 Berger Hybrids.
Most guys shooting those bullets today, opt for a 8.5T
since i have a 7-08 w/10t, 7saum w/8t, i'll just go w/9t for the 284win. i kind build each caliber per cartridge to use a certain range of bullets. the less capacity of the cartridge the lower weight of bullets are used. 7-08 will be the lightest to 150, 284win somewhere between 139/140-168 and the saum 165-195. i also try and keep velocities above 2,700 for personal choice.
