ISO: 7mm (7x57) barrel for 98 Mauser

Wanted: A sporter contour barrel (take-offs considered too) no shorter than 22” chambered and twisted for 7x57mm Mauser. Got a project in the works and trying to keep cost minimal. If I am going to have to pay more than ~$200, I will probably just pony up for a Douglas or a Shaw barrel.

Time lines sure seem to have increased and given my recent history with gunsmiths and barrels I didn’t expect to have my 7x57 back from Pac Nor before Christmas. Sent it there mid June. The barrel has been installed just waiting on gunsmiths installation of the 1/4 rib and blueing. All that to say, like most I was given a time line of 4 to 6 months. Had I possessed the skills and equipment to install a barrel on a number one I’d have been done in five weeks. Pac nor does have a page, “Ready to Ship barrels” there was a 7 Mauser on there not to long ago but it is gone. Perhaps that list could be helpful.

140 Accubonds and ballistic tips maybe try some 150s. If 175 work I may take some to Africa just to see what they will do

I have a shot at some 150 grain W-W Powerpoints and 154 grain Hdy SPs that I might pick up. I have some Speer 130’s and Remington CL 140’s here also. If I were to go to Africa, I would probably try the 160-175’s as well but for a lightweight deer rifle that may occasionally get to go elk hunting here in PNW, a 140-150 grain bullet going 2500-2600 fps sounds like a good combo to me.

I’ve had good luck with the 140s in the “old barrel” we will see what happens in the new one. I found a note from back in 2018 that gave the top slot to the 154 Hornady but I don’t recall using them much. I’m toying with the idea of using mine for elk this year, drew my third choice-a cow hunt right out behind the house. If a 7-08 can kill elk a hot loaded 7x57 will.
I bought my rifle used and it had been. Knew I would eventually be replacing the barrel. It was a fun one to wear out. I shot that thing a lot. Enough recoil you have to mind your manners when shooting but you can shoot it as much as you want during a range day.
Enjoy your project, its a great cartridge and I thing really has potential with modern powders and bullets.
