i tend too stay with 1 caliber and have been for decades until the last 10 years then i started playing the fields. i'm a 26cal fan and have been since i started shooting a 264wm back in '76. seems like every time a new 26cal appears i get 1 and also buy some older 26cals regardless of the metric system. i have 5 (which is my largest selection in 1 caliber) 26cal chamberings (6..5gren, 6.5manbun, 260rem, 6.5prc & 264wm). tied for 2nd place is 3 27cals (6.8spc, 277fury & 270win) and 3 30cals (300bo, 308win & 300wm). other than that i have at least 1 in every caliber starting with 22cal up to 33cal (or 338cal).

SO, do you gravitate towards 1 caliber OR like at least 1 of each?

At first I stayed with one caliber (7mm): 7mm TCU, 7mm-08, 284 Winchester. That lasted for about 10-12 years.
After the 284 Win, I started playing the field.

The only rifle I hunted with until I was pushing 40 was an 06. Things have changed dramatically since then. While I don’t have a 35 anything anymore I’m pretty well covered up to 375HH. Because I didn’t have a 35 I bought a 577 Nitro. It worked well on one elk.
Last year I ran right at 1000 rounds through my 300HH getting ready for Africa. That work certainly paid off. The 06. 338s 375s didn’t see any work last year.
I also spent a lot of time with the 257 Roberts and the 275 Rigby, at least 500 rounds a piece through them. The 275 rigby is getting a new barrel as we speak. It will see action this fall as well as going to Africa in late May. I guess I’m playing the field.

About all I used for years was something in 30 caliber. A bit of 30-30, but mostly 30-06 until it was about 1973 when I switched to a lighter rifle in .308. I did mess with other caliber cartridges but for the hunt it was always a 30.My first successful Elk hunt I used a .300 Winm Mag. We won't discuss the several early elk hunts that drew tag soup.
Over the years I've played with several different cartridges for one reason or another but lately have run with the cartridegs. A custom Mauser in 30-06 which is usually considered the back up rifle for whatever I'm hunting.
I've been interested in the.35 Whelen for a while and it is now my prime elk rifle. I've been doing some serious load work up with the 7x57 and a .280 Rem. I had built up.

Circumstances over the last six years has put a serious curtailment on any hunting or shooting. About the only thing open to me would be one of those pay to play Texas game ranches but them good old boys are awfully greedy. They could probably put me on a stand or drive around until we see something I could like. I don't mind the stand so much but I never could sit still for any great length of time.

i'll also add what drives my decisions is that it can fit into an AR. if i get a mrad then i'll expand as i like having 1 receiver that will fit a multitude of choices for quick changes.

When younger I only had one deer rifle so that's what I used. First started out with a 30-06. Would trade for a different caliber just to try it out. Later on was ble to acquire more rifles different calibers. Now I usually pick three before season, sight in and rotate during the seasons. Where I hunt dictates which rifle I carry sometimes. Good to have options these days.

I started out with a 30-06 and ended up with 2 of them.
From there it got a 243 Win and then a 280 Rem. I moved up to a 35 Whelen and then down to a 257 Roberts. Then the 338 RUM came along. I’ve taken 100+ animals with it and it’s been my favorite. I do switch it up now to include the 375 H&H Mag, 22 Nosler, 6.5 Wby RPM, 308 Win, 280AI and 300 Blackout.

I like to carry different guns during deer season. A scoped 30-06 sometimes, a scoped 30 TC some, a 348 Winchester with an aperture sight or an open sighted .256 Newton. I don’t know why but I’d like a 32 Special to add to the rotation.
