I am the new owner of a 280 Rem. Never owned one before. Have owned 7mm RM and do own 7mm08. Haven't checked for past load data on here just thought I would ask. Will be used for hunting whitetails here in WV and banging some plates at the range occasionally. So, what do you guys like to load in your 280?

A few loads that have worked well for me:

Remington 24" barrel--

WW CCI BR2 HDY 139 GMX 54.0 grains Rl17 3035 fps
FC F210M NOS 140 E-TIP 55.4 grains RL17 3039 fps
FC F210M NOS 150 ABLR 60.0 grains VN560 3033 fps
(All sub-MOA)

Winchester 22" barrel--

RP R9.5 NOS 140 AB 57.5 grains H4831 2739 fps
FC F210 NOS 140 BT 59.0 WXR 2925 fps
RP R9.5 NOS 140 PT 54.0 H100V 2925 fps
RP R9.5 SWF 140 AF 55.5 H4831 2739 fps
(All sub-MOA)

Winchester 22" barrel--

FC WLR HDY 139 SST 58.0 H4831 2806 fps
(sub-MOA)

All loads were proven by taking both whitetails and mule deer at ~40 to ~250 yards.

My favorite deer load is a 140 BBC with RL26 in my old M725 280 Remington. The 140 Sierra SBT is good as well. That load is good for 3100.

In my M7600 I use the 145 LRX with H4831SC. That load is a 2975 and very accurate as well.

280’s a good one. Which rifle did you get?

Bought Gregory B's Ruger No 1. Really nice guy and a pretty rifle.

Lots of information here. Got some 139,140,150gr bullets to try on hand along with IMR & H 4831, RL19. Saw where Hornady lists Win SB6.5 in their data. Plenty to start with. Thanks.

You are gonna love the 280 Remington. It’s a great round with a lot of potential.
I pretty much ran 140’s in my 280 Remington on top of RL19 and IMR/H4831 for 3000 fps.
The 140 BT accounted for several WT deer, mostly DRT.

In my first 280 Rem (Browning A Bolt), back in the late 80s, I ran the max load of IMR4350 with the 162 gr Hdy Interlock. Didn't have access to chrony back then, so unsure what velocity I was getting, but the felt recoil was significantly more than the factory fodder with 160 gr bullets, and the dents on the metal plates at the range were deeper. It would place 5 shots into groups at 200 yards that were completely covered by a quarter (sorry, never did measure them back then.)

My current 280 Rem (semi custom LH Rem 700 XCR), loves the now discontinued Federal Premium 140 gr AccuBond ammo (1/2" groups at 100 yards, and gets 2883 fps out of the 24" barrel - hoping this will get better with more rounds through it). Nosler's 140 gr AccuBond ammo only gets 2797 fps and only produced a 1.362" group at 100 yards. The Federal Premium 150 gr Partition ammo produced 2804 fps and 1.165" groups at 100 yards.
I am also hoping that more velocity will produce better accuracy in this rifle.

And, as I am using the 140 gr AccuBond in my 7mm-08, I want to move up to the 150 gr BT and AB bullets in the 280 Rem.
QL suggests that I should be able to achieve 3000-3100 fps out of my 24" barrel with pressures up to 65K psi, with Re-16, 17 and 19, H-414, W760, H4831 (and the SC version), and N-560.
We'll see...

I have always liked the 280 Rem! A much under appreciated cartridge, that when loaded to its full potential is capable of taking almost all of our North American game, is capable of great accuracy, and is easy on the shoulder.

Hope you enjoy your adventure with your new-to-you 280 Rem! The Ruger No.1 is a great rifle, and is fun to hunt with!

This probably won't be a lot of help but my pet load for the .280 Rem. is 57.8 gr. WMR (Winchester Magnum Rifle) under a 160 gr. Speer Grand Slam, the older two core version. Velocity is 2907 FPS with group average slightly under one inch. Brass was Winchester nickel plated .280 Rem. and WLR standard rifle primer. I've always preferred heavier bullets for hunting
big game.

The big reason this wasn't much help is Winchester discontinued WMR about 20 or so years ago. I lucked out and got four 8 pound cans of the stuff. I've tried it in the .270, 280 and 300 Win. Mag with excellent results. Not good in the .243 or 30-06.

The Nosler manual #8 shows a max load of IMR 7828 of 54.5 gr. for 2752 FPS which is the only other power I tried in my .280.I did load several grains higher with that powder and came close to that 2907 FPS from WMR.

Do a little research on the cartridge aand you'll find like a ew other cartridge, the .280 is not loaded to it's full potential. When Remington brought the.280 put, they requested SAAMI to keep the Maximum Average Pressure (MAP) the same as allowed for the 30-06. FWIW, they did that to the .35 Whelen as well. Their reasoning is they were afraid that loading them to their proper levels would damage their pump and autoloader rifles.

To clarify my comments, The last 6 or 7 years I hunted was for elk only. Drawing a tag in Arizona is a miracle and For the extra it cost me, doing a guided private ranch hunt was well worth it in not getting the worry about tags and such. FWIW, my primary elk rifle is a 35 Whelen and the 30-06 is usually the back up rifle. I'd been thinking the .280 would work just as well. As always, YMMV.

My 280 really likes IMR 4831 and a 139 gr SST bullet. It shoots them at 2900 fps and 3/4 inch groups. Plenty good for my hunting style!

I tried a higher charge weight and got 3000 but had ejector marks, and primers that were a little too flat for my comfort.

Beautiful rifle and with the 26" barrel you should get the best velocity possible out of that rifle in 280 Remington. I had a Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 Remington with a 22" barrel. I used 140 gr. Partitions or Solid Base boattail bullets in it (before Accubonds) and they both shot very well. I used 54.0 grs. of IMR4350 for 2940 fps. It shot very well.
