Glenn and I went out to shoot some steel after lunch on Tuesday.
I just wanted to shoot two of my center-grip XP‘s to check drops from the standing position, shooting off my tripod.
7mm SAUM/160 LRX and the 300 SAUM/150 Raptor.
The 7 SAUM took a ride to South Africa and back and was never shot, while the ammunition went to Heathrow Airport and back to Gillette.
I am happy to say that in spite of all the extra travel the combo shot good.
We set up steel at 297 yards, right at 500 yards, 670 yards, and at 1016 yards.
I shot both of my XP‘s from the standing position.
I started off with the 7 SAUM, shot the target at 297 two times, went to 500 and shot it two times and was glad to see that my drops were spot on.
I started to put it away and Glenn asked me why wasn’t I going to shoot at 670 yards?
I didn’t really have a good answer, so I said sure I’ll shoot at 670.
It was one of those days to look good, and I hit the edge of the little red bullseye at around 7 o’clock.
There was no reason to mess up that wonderful shot, and I said, “I’m done with that one.”
I then grabbed the 300 SAUM and shot a couple of times at 297 and 500 yards with good results, and put it up.
Glenn started shooting his center-grip 6GT (from the bench) at 297 and then at 500 and had switchy winds and got frustrated, and started to put it up, and then I asked him if I could shoot it at the 1016 yard target?
Sure!
Got it on steel, got everything centered up, and told him to get all that switchy wind shooting out of his system.
He started pounding the far target!
And then he moved back to the 500 yard target and hit it multiple times, then went out to the 670 yard target where his first two shots he put on the edge of the steel at around 4 or 5 o’clock that you can see in the picture.
Then, he pulls out his rear grip 223 Remington, and starts at 500 yards, moves out to 670, hits the target one time, and then he goes to 1016 yards.
It was fun spotting for him!
After a while, he told me it was my time to get behind his 223 Remington, and then I was shooting at the far target.
There’s just a lot of fun shooting a fast twist 223 Remington specialty pistol!
The small tack table and bag set up was the way that I had planned to hunt in South Africa.
If, I need to shoot from a standing position for antelope or elk, I will be using this set up.
I might use a shorter tripod, but my compact one only weighs 7 ounces less than the one in the picture.
