The old 30-06 got me a first last weekend. 2 fallow does with one shot. I was never a fan of the 30-06 I always shot the 7mmRM and then the 280ai. I have grown fond of the cartridge and its accuracy which surprised me how good it was. Varget was the key with 165 grain bullets for me too.

Great rifle and very cool cartridge. Another one of the green machine's marketing failures. If I had just one cartridge for where I shoot and it was a 7SAUM, I'd be a happy camper...the game, not so much ;-)

Yep I had that problem with a couple of boxes of 225grain 338's. They were replaced without any questions asked. Can't fault the service.

I reckon I used the 70 grain BT's too in part because I could get them in a box of 250. Good little bullet

This might help with some of your thinking. I chose the Hornady stuff for simplicity just because it is in their calculator and typically shoots okay. I ran the 150eldx at 3,000fps, the 162eldx at 2,900fps and the 180eldm at 2,700fps. Figured they were all around the mark, allowed for a 200m...

Don’t underestimate the 150bt in the 280ai. Driven at 3,000fps it is a much underrated combination. That is a bullet that hunters seem to overlook and I’m not sure why, it is lethal.

Emus and ostriches have a lot in common by the sounds of it, really tough animals. Also think all those feathers make it more challenging to work out exactly where to shoot. Great pics, thanks for sharing

150 to 165 grains seems to be the sweet spot in the 280ai. Unless you are really going to stretch out there those bullet weights are about a perfect match to the powder capacity you have to play with. Absolutely one of my all time favourite cartridges but just don’t ask more of it than it can...
