Yeah, classic move forgetting the damn drain. I've dumped more than one batch of powder that way over the years. Figured out quick that stuff makes decent fertilizer too - nitrogen boost for the garden without wasting it. Your pepper plant pic shows it works pretty good. Nice experiment.
I picked up a Stoeger 20 gauge a while back and it's held up solid for the price. Patterns decent with the chokes and handles birds fine without beating you up too much. If you're sticking under 500 it's tough to beat for a starter double that sees real use.
For a spring black bear, I'd probably lean the same way as Guy mentioned and save them for deer, honestly. If you've got some Accubonds or Partitions on the shelf, that's what I'd grab. Those old Silvertips are cool as hell for the nostalgia factor, but no sense taking a chance on a bear...

If I was in your shoes I probably wouldn’t overthink it too much. All three you listed are solid and plenty of guys are killing deer every fall with scopes in that same class. For the kind of ranges you mentioned, a simple 3-9x or 3.5-10x with a 40mm objective is about as practical as it gets...
In fact, the most interesting thing is their durability. Since they do not stretch, stretch, or lose their shape, their service life should be significantly longer than that of conventional cartridges.

The test barrel used for book data often differs significantly from your setup in terms of length, chamber dimensions, and even rifling. These all impact velocity.
It’s really admirable that you were able to recognize the signs of dependence and work through it—that takes a lot of self-awareness and strength. Unfortunately, there are definitely situations where patients get misled by pharmaceutical reps about the addictive potential of certain drugs, which...
