30-06 and N555

This afternoon being too wet to do anything else , I dug out the 30-06. I decided to try out the 220gr RN bullets I got and some 180gr AB Grade C. Input my data into QL for some baseline with N555 and went from there. My Winchester brass is a little large on internal capacity making N555 ideal to work with.

Both top charges do have a slight swipe. The velocity on the 180gr AB was more than I was expecting. These 2 will go on the list for accuracy testing on my summer vacation. I will focus on 2600fps with the 220s and 2850fps with the 180s.
Those red tipped black AB do get the cool factor.

Looks like a good start. Vihtavouri powders seem like really good stuff. if you can get those speeds safely that's pushing on the lower end of 300 WSM performance. In my last 30-06 I tried RL 22 with the 220 gr Partition and got 2550 fps, this is definitely a step up in performance. If you can get 2850 fps safely with the 180's that's pretty amazing.

Loaded few of each this morning and hit the range before the rain moved in.

Needless to say I’m surprised with the 220 RN.
The Grade C 180gr AB shot somewhat decent. I did a second group to see if the AB didn’t like following the Hornadys. Both are about the same size.

Yesterday I loaded them at 55.2gr , should put me in the mid 2500’s.

Running the pressures of the 30-06 up to those for a 270 makes the 30-06 performance shine.
I can get the 180 NAB leaving a 22" barrel at ~2850 fps with several powders.

I have run the Hornady 180 gr. SP at a little over 2800 FPS from two Remington M700s, a BDL and a Classic.. Accuracy was OK (1.5") but could stand improvement.

Vihtavouri propellant is good stuff. I use Vit. N560 in my .25-06 & get great accuracy. It's pretty pricey here in UK at around £120/kilo - $150 approx. But that's around 2.2lbs.

Last week I finished my box of these 2 bullets. With the Garmin I can record my load data and these 2 look and shot good. So today I did a refill.

I need to revisit n555 in my 30-06.

I played with it some last year and velocity with 165 bullets was slow compared to h4350. Accuracy was okay. But not long after I played with n555 I discovered I had a scope issue and had to replace that scope. So, accuracy not being on point could have been more of a scope issue rather than a loading issue.

But with the heat index being well over 100 and high humidity for the next week or so, all range trips have been put on hold for the time being.

I think 165s might be on the light side for N555. I just know it works well under the 220gr RN for sure.

I know in the older Hornady manuals they listed the 220 for dangerous game. Not sure I want to try stopping a charging elephant with it
