Good Morning.

My first time posting…

I have a question regarding the RCBS Summit press. I have been using the press for almost a year and I really enjoy it. However, I am stumped as to why sizing can be so problematic and was wondering if there are Summit users who can help me correct whatever I may be doing wrong.

I noticed my issue when full length sizing some 280 Remington brass that was given to me. I know the brass was once fired in a rifle I used to own. Since I’m resizing for another rifle, I followed the normal instructions for the die - touch shell holder, then another 1/8 to 1/4 quarter turn. Doing so allowed the round to chamber but with resistance when closing the bolt. Using my headspace comparator, it became clear the shoulder was not being pushed back, which seems to tell me the case is not entering the die fully. Also, I have noticed that there is a gap between the shell holder and the die when a case is sized.

In order to get the die down to the shell holder I had to adjust the die down an additional 3/4 of a turn during the initial setup of the sizing die. This places a huge stress on the toggle that you can feel and hear. Probably not good for the press…

So, are there any Summit users who have had issues with sizing?

Thanks Jeff

Hmm... Haven't run into that yet and have used the Summit quite a bit the past two years. Have you contacted RCBS? They have excellent customer service and may be able to recommend something.

I have a Summit press, but haven't set it up as yet. So cannot help you here. As recommended above by Guy, contact RCBS to discuss the issue.
I hope to once I get the new addition built and have the space to set up my reloading bench!
I was surprised when I contacted Federal's Custom Ammunition Shop; they use the Summit press for all their custom reloading!

You are correct about the linkage. I did call RCBS support and you are correct about the linkage.

The tech knew exactly what I was calling about before I finished explaining the situation; advised me to screw the die down to shell holder and then finger tighten the die before raising the ram to adjust for cam over. Said it would take another half turn at least.

I guess a career in IT dealing with support that is anything but helpful contributes to my reluctance to call for help, but I did after reading Mr. Miner’s reply. Very pleased with the support from RCBS.
