270 Win RL26 advice

Looking for some load advice and it's been a long time since I've been this far off. Remembered I had a jug of RL26 in the back of the cabinet, wanted to try it with a newer 270. Aliant only has data for 150 gr, I am using the 140 Sierra Tipped Game King. Max for the 150 Partition is 60.8, so I loaded a few up around 58.5, expecting to get high 2900s. Used F215Ms for primers.


Tested today, it was warm, approximately 85 and in the sun, but it was shot first from the AC truck. 58.5gr left me with a heavy bolt lift and 3181 fps with the Garmin. I shut it down there. I have a good load in the mid 2800s with Hunter, more I just trying to use the RL26.


Most of my use of 26 has been with 300 WM, any help is appreciated.

When working with an unknown combo I drop back 10% from a similar bullet and work up 1gr at a time to pressure.
You are using a 215 vs 210 what Alliant lists.

If you know anyone using a magnum I bet they'd be interested in the RL26. Almost seems a shame to shoot it in the 270.

Having used both RL 26 and N-560 in a 280 Remington, I would suggest using N-560 because of availability.

In my Rem 700 CDL .270 with 24"bbl

140gn Hornady and 59gns W780 produced a 5 shot average of 3018fps
140gn Hornady and 54gns H4350 Produced a 5 shot average of 2985fps
140gn Hornady and 57.5gns RL19 produced a 5 shot average of 2971fps
140gn Hornady and 53gns W760 produced a 5 shot average of 2947fps

Between the mag primer and I'd bet that 140gr TGK being as long or longer than a 150gr Partition, definitely need to start lower. R22 can be very good in the 270 with heavier bullets as well.

In my Rem 700 with 24 in Douglas barrel I load 59.5grs RL26 150gr Nosler BT Fed 210 primer gives 3045FPS. Could go to 60.5 grs but didn't see the need. 59.5grs gives .5835 in group and no pressure problems. Works for me. Dan.

Not me. It hammers in a 270 Win. I wouldn’t give away an ounce of the stuff in order to feed my 270’s. 3000-3050 easy in 22” guns with 150’s and 3150+ with 130’s.

Yeah, that’s an elk killer in my book. 26 is a screamer in a 270 Win. Always been accurate for me as well. I don’t tell the elk or deer it’s not as temp stable as H4831 and we all get along nicely

I am shooting the 140 TGK in my Tikka with RL23 and CCI250's. I run it with 55.5gn and I get 2965-2980 pretty consistently with single digit SD. Accuracy is .6-.8

I also run n160. 58.5gn gives a 140 AB with Fed 210M about 3100fps but once its over 75 degrees I get heavier bolt lift and slight ejector marks.

The profile/bearing surface of the TGK is going to change the pressure curve compared to the 150 Partition. 58.5gn of n160 with the 140 AB was fine until it hit 75 degrees. I tried the same 58.5gn with the 140 TGK when it was 65 degrees and it was way over pressure. I have found the 140 TGK with n160 needs nearly 2gn less than the 140 AB to not be over pressure.

I would think dropping down to 55.5-56gn would be the starting point with RL26.

H4831sc is a classic powder that works well but might not get the hottest velocity. It's very stable though.

I’m loading 130’s and 140’s for my REM 700 in 270 win. Mine like H4350 for both boolits. For 140’s I’m using the Hornady interlock at 53gr and a COL of 3.32” going 3050fps out of a 24” barrel. I’m getting right around an inch group size and use it for whitetail deer in PA so my shots aren’t far but last year I had a shot I didn’t take at 368yds, I didn’t take the shot cause the deer was in tall grass and I only saw the head and top of the back and it was a doe so I wasn’t sure if little ones were there too and didn’t want to risk it, but I easily could have made the shot and flattened her. I’ve used H4831 and H4831sc as well as RL22 all with good results just got better results with H4350. Same rifle shoots 130’s with 54gr of H4350 at 1”
