Changing loads for Elk vs. deer

Cow elk go down with .243/6mm from young shooters that I know. So, anything with a good bullet north of 6mm works fine at a reasonable distance. Your listed guns are fine on that account. Of course bigger is better, with more margin for error, as long as the shooter shoots it well. The guns...

    Grizzly Mount ?

There is no way I would keep something that valuable "For The Memories" if I could sell it and go make more memories. I think I hear him say the value is in the memories. In fact, if there was a good charity to give it to, I would consider that, because it would just add intrinsic value to my...

    Loading the Blue Cyclones!

Was deciding between my 7mm rem and my 25-06 for deer this coming season. I think I'm gonna try me some 115 blue cyclones and a zero at 300 yards... Gotta get through this heat in the Valley of the Sun first. Planes can't take off or land. I remember the record of 122 in 1990... Sent from my...

    6.5 Bullets--Longer Better?

Depends on your twist in the barrel for heavier bullets. As far as bullets go, the heavier and longer they are, the BC gets better, so in some ways they are "better" for some purposes like longer range shots. So totally depends on your gun and your purpose. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

    Forearm Reenforement

The budget savage axis stocks, and others are notoriously flexible. This marginally improves the axis stocks, but can do more for other styles. A google search will locate how they do it, very similar to yours. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

Some times you just get lucky.

Finished my first OCW test today.

42 is a sweet spot. Definitely load up to max, looks like a second node would be higher. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

Finished my first OCW test today.

The point if impact moved the least between 41.8 and 42.1 grains. It went from 11 o'clock for #1, drastically down to 7 and 6 o'clock for #2 and #3. It then jumped back up to 10 o'clock for #4. You also got nice triangle groups for both. It would be easier to see with 5 shot groups, but I like...

shortcut to finding a tight group

I had never loaded before and this is my first experience and story. Maybe I eas lucky. I studied very carefully the OCW method. I read and I read and I read until I figured out what it meant and how to do it. I also studied what the best powders and loads tended to be for my rifle from...

    Vertical Stringing

When reloading, assuming no other factor, what causes vertical stringing? And, why do some like to see it to know they are closing in on a good load? I tried google, but wasn't satisfied... thanks. I know there are lots of other things that contribute to VS like breathing, jumping bipod/rear...

    Range Day - 7mm RM

Darkhorse, you are right on finding a node for any particular charge by adjusting seating depth. I do that as my second step after the OCW test, to "accurize" the load. You are just cutting out out the load development step that looks for a charge weight, and going to accuracy. You will hit...

    Range Day - 7mm RM

Yep, I went in .4 increments, following the OCW method of 7 to 10 percent increases. I would suggest following the OCW exactly as Dan Newberry details it. It worked for me. But, I had to read it a bunch to figure out why. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

How Much Does A headwind impact .223 ?

Are you saying that for the third and fourth cartridge the bullet "set back" in the case? Recoil affected OAL because neck tension is too loose.

How Much Does A headwind impact .223 ?

Crimping creates consistent neck tension. But, the environmental factors are probably greater here.

How Much Does A headwind impact .223 ?

Crimp can affect pressure. Pressure affects velocity. Velocity affects drop. If your crimp loads were the only low ones, then I would start there.
