Needed a lightweight rifle to roam ridges with in November. Got a good deal on a lightly used Thompson Center Venture in .243 a couple of months ago. It had already been serviced for both recalls. I sent it out to Jesse Ocumpaugh, and it came back as a .358 Winchester - barrel bobbed to 20" with...
First choice: Leupold 1-4x20.
Second choice (the 'if the budget won't support new' choice): An old-school Burris 1.75-5x20
I had the Leupy on my 1895, but took it off for a set of XS Ghost Ring peep sights.
I have a 1938 BRNO action in the white. No work has been done to the bolt or safety, but it is absolutely pristine. I had originally talked with a well-regarded Mauser gunsmith about building me a 6-284 or a 6mm Remington AI with it when the 6mm Remmy that I just bought came outta nowhere and I...
Your Grampa was a Wizard! That is some handsome rifle. You're a lucky man to have that passed down to you. How's the throat holding up in that barrel? I read that the 6-284 can be rough on barrels if loaded on the hot side.
I second the Nosler (C/T) 300gr BST in the .45-70 GOVT rifle. I have shot some very acceptable 100-yard groups with that bullet over RL7 and IMR3031 out of a Marlin 1895 with 22" barrel. And don't discount cast boolits, either. The 405gr gas-checked cast shoot very well out of a micro-groove...
That's why I went with the 6mm Remmy instead of a .243 Win.... I wanted the bigger case capacity so I could use slower powders in that 24" barrel. Hope it works out.
I posted a WTB for some Nosler 6mm 95gr BT in Classifieds for my recent acquisition, and user '6mm Remington' suggested I post some pics of it. Here we go. FN Mauser action barreled by Atkinson & Marquart. 1 in 10 twist. Just mounted the Leupold 3-9x50mm last night. Load development starts...
+1 on the CT BT's. I've been loading the 300gr .458's for my .45-70, and not only are they a dream to seat (straight and smooth), but they group much better than the Hornady or Speer JHP's. I load them with IMR4320 and RL7 and WLR magnum primers.
