I'm very pleased with how these turned out. More bologna making is in my future.
Bring the beer and crackers on over. I only made about six or seven pounds of bologna but another six pounds or so of snack sticks are going into the smoker tomorrow. Should keep us going for a little while.
... is now in the smoker.
Here they are waiting for the smoker to warm up:
Here they are in the smoker:
And here's the smoker bundled up and doing it's job:
I'm planning on burning a pot or two of chips and then transferring them to the oven to finish them at a constant 200 degrees. I...
Ok, looks like I was right in the ball park with this one. My thoughts were a solid 4.5 with the possibility of a case being made for 5.5.
Here's the deer:
She has a short body but measured 41" around her chest. That put the estimated weight way off. Her actually dressed weight was around...
Very nearly, but the .280 has a bit more advantage over the 7mm-08 because the shoulder is moved forward farther than most -06 offspring. I believe Charlie mentioned this somewhere.
I read what you wrote and was agreeing with you for the most part, Charlie. Still, the fact that the 7mm RM holds 8 more grains of that particular powder means that it will be able to push the bullet faster when loaded to the same pressure.
The difference in case capacity between the 7-08 and .280 is about 16 grains H2O. To claim that the 7mm-08 does not give up anything in velocity to the .280 is absurd. That's about the same volume that separates the .280 from the 7mm Rem. Mag... so is the 7mm-08 the 7mm Rem Mag's equal?
You...
I've been collecting lower jaws since last year. My wife thinks I'm a freak. I thought it would be interesting to see what the knowledgeable folks here come up with for ages based on tooth photos.
I'll post up some photos of a jaw. After there have been some "guesses", I'll post a pic of the...
That's frustrating, Tom. With a little luck you won't see that particular guy again. Unfortunately trespassers are in no short supply. We haven't had any problems yet this year (that we know of, anyway)... knock on wood.
Last year we had a guy walk on and position himself nicely for one of our...
Thanks, Guy. The deer hauler isn't so fancy as it once was. It's a '95. Most of the carpet has been removed. The air suspension has been replaced with springs. The plastic sills have been removed and rock sliders installed... Steel bumpers, no air dams or other extra plastic to make things...
Thanks, I thought that too about the possibility of a buck coming into the field. They certainly seemed to think something would be joining them. We are only allowed to take one buck per year here in PA. I took mine in archery season, so only does were on the menu for me.
Thanks again, guys.
The two doe this year were the first I've ever taken with a .270. I'm still not giving up my beloved .30-06, but I must admit that it certainly did its job and did it well.
I thought Ruger suggested something like 90 or 100 inch/lbs for the front (angled screw). I seem to remember that it was something significantly higher that what my Fat Wrench can go. I'll have to go back and double check.
Maybe I should try lighter since my .280 doesn't want to shoot consistently.
I, too, feel your pain. My archery buck in 2010 dressed out at 165 lbs. I was using my dads pickup at the time which has an EZ Dumper dump bed in the back. That puts the tailgate up pretty high. I'm guessing somewhere between 3 and 4 feet. I found a tow chain behind the seat, wrapped it around...
... the .270 stole the show this year.
I headed out to a stand this afternoon that offers the potential for some longish shots. Despite not really intending to take a deer today, I took the .270 instead of the 35 Whelen since it lends itself a little better to the ranges expected at this stand...
