Well said.I'd concentrate on my own skills and actual shooting at distance rather than worry about 100 yard groups, and spending more money for an insignificant accuracy improvement.
Scotty has a 7mm Mashburn Super so he doesn't really need anything else no matter how close nor how far the elk is located. :)
With good bullets he is all set so long as he shoots it well.
Ask Warren Page and Bob Hagel.
This is what I call the Concept of Creeping Incrementalism, the illogical conclusion of which is that the 7/08 is the practical equivalent of the 338 Win Mag. :)
Both will kill elk of course but the notion that they are the same is silly. There are differences between 300 and 338 magnums...
Wooters time here was brief. He was attending an SCI gathering,so a friend and I spent a day with him.
He was a true Texas gentleman and great company. He also had a lot of hunting experience. I always liked his 280 Remington, but he was a very big fan of the 7RM as well.If anything Wooters...
Years ago I belted a pronghorn through the lower lungs and heart with a 130 gr Bitterroot from a 270 Winchester, distance about 400 yards. It ran in a tiny circle and collapsed.
A Bitterroot is about as tough as a Barnes X.
Id use that LRX in a heartbeat. I don't believe in specialized deer...
Im sorry you find my experiences objectionable simply because they don't jive with yours. I'm sure that makes you very uncomfortable.
I have no interest in the 280AI and could never see the sense in it. I was never an Ackley fan. He was not really a hunter. So, "no", I have not "tested" RL 22...
The 7mm-140 gr load will still shoot flatter than the 30/06-165 at any distance from 300 yards to 600.
Tight chambers have almost no effect on velocity; it's barrels and throats that do that.
John Wooters loved the 308 for his deer hunting in East Texas thickets. For his western elk and mule...
Thanks for the explanation. I routinely shoot to 600 which is as far as I can go without a 4 hour drive but I have better things to do. :) Don't care what happens at 800 yards; totally irrelevant, and wondering how much killing you've done at that distance?
I first spotted temp variations...
I've been using RL22 since it hit the market and have never seen this....ever.
Ive never seen a powder give a variance of 150 fps gain from 75-90 degrees;and100 fps from 75 to 35. None of these temps are extreme in the slightest.
IME it takes temps down to zero and below to show any degree of...
The Bitterroot started the bonded bullet trend and is what led to the development of the Aframe; ditto the Northfork by Mike Brady who was a fan of the BBC and Bill Steigers.
They all differ slightly in construction but all are excellent BG bullets. Before he passed away, Steigers told me that...
Ive got rifles here chambered for 7 Rem Mag, 30/06, 270 and 7mm Mashburn Super.
I'll use any of them. I am kind of ambivalent when it comes to cartridges and don't see any magic in any of them.
Everybody knows the 30/06 kills everything. :)
Guys this is all interesting conversation if we stack the deck to limit distance to 300-350 yards; give the 7 Rem Mag and "old" bullet like the 160 NPT,and the 30/06 a "new" bullet like an AB, and say we are never shooting past 300-350 yards.
Swell.
Even at that the 7 RM beats the 30/06 clear...
At 300-350 yards we aren't likely to see much difference between a 30/06 and a 7 Rem Mag in terms of how they kill;I've seen both used on elk further than that, actually out to about 500 yards and even at that distance you won't notice much difference if good bullets are used.
What the 7 Rem...
