Chasing hunting rifle accuracy

I think that is why I'm taking the 270 Mike. It's always been lucky and i need all I can get.

Yep, that's "settling" .................. :lol:

If memory serves you are using the 250 grain AB? My testing of that bullet produced 6 jugs of penetration, 2.04X expansion and 60.5% weight retention. Unless I go after DG with that rifle, that 250 gr. AB will get-r-done with any game animal.

My mind sometimes works backwards or not at all, as some will attest. Here are my thoughts/questions?
Do you really want to spend $1500 to gain a 1/4 inch?
Do you really think that any elk you will ever kill will notice the difference?
Are you disastified with your current rifle, other than group size?
Are you laying awake at night worried that you may miss an elk because of group size?
Elk have a very large kill zone, do you think that a 1/4 inch smaller group will really make a difference?
If you answered yes to one or more of these, then perhaps you need another rifle that may "not" shoot much better. Hopefully you laughed!!!!!!!!
I have been shooting a 300WM since 1970, and can truly state that a 3/4 group would not have caused me to miss any of the animals that I have killed. Mine shoots a little tighter, but an extra 1/4 of an inch is nothing to worry about.

Well said.I'd concentrate on my own skills and actual shooting at distance rather than worry about 100 yard groups, and spending more money for an insignificant accuracy improvement.

My take you have more accuracy than you will ever use in the field. I would take your load and hunt with it anyday. Do I have more accurate rifles than yours yes and no, my .223 Rem shoots .77 inch groups at 200 yds, my 6mm Rem 2.3 inch groups at 300 yds and my .264 Win Mag 2.5 inch groups at 300 yds and my 300 H & H does 3.5 inches at 300 yds. The way I see it big bore BIG TARGET little bore little target.
Face it a .223 Rem is a Praire Dog gun and there never enough accuracy group size, Elk your trying to hit a huge target. For 99.999% of your hunting you have all you will ever need.
Now if your a gun nut like a lot of us here keep shooting it's fun and keeps you sharp, but you don't need to improve your load for hunting.
