I must have shot a bazillion rounds out of the 30/06 with 165 and 150 gr bullets;and the 7 Rem Mag with 140, 150, and 160 gr bullets loaded to full potential in each, and out to 600 yards.
I have never seen a 30/06 load that can keep up with a 7 Rem Mag in terms of trajectory, unless the 7 RM is...
Dr Mike the shooting/handloading world is in a funk over "temp sensitivity". I swear a lot of it is "monkey see/monkey do" .
I noticed this propensity of cartridges to lose velocity as temps drop years ago and back then prime offenders were single based powders like IMR4350, IMR4831,and WW 760...
I'd probably use the AB. I stopped worrying about whether controlled expansion bullets are "needed" for deer sized game a few decades ago. There is a singular degree of "dead".
I stopped years back when I started whacking everything with Nosler Partitions and watched everything from brown bear...
When I spoke with Federal about the overly "hot" 7mm WSM ammo, they also told me that the 7 REM is loaded to substantially lower pressures than 7mm WSM, hence the difference between the factory 7 Rem Mag and your hand loads. I have seen that myself.
Have experienced the exact same situation with Federal Premium in all three WSM's. It's just that some stuff is loaded hotter than others.
I did chronograph 7mm WSM Federal Premium ammo with 160 NPT in two rifles; a M70 FW and a Kimber Montana. The stuff averaged around 3280 fps which is way...
Nothing mysterious here. The OP should do fine full length sizing the brass assuming he does it correctly and does not mess up the brass in the process.
No one can comment on 5-10 shot nickel sized groups. Too many variables.
When RL 22 was introduced i used it to work loads in a my first 280, a custom Mauser, with Shilen barrel. The powder was "new" but similar to MRP,and IIRC was also made by the same company in Sweden.
Coincidentally I worked up to 61 gr in Remington cases with the 140 Sierra, Nosler partition...
I know of 4-5 7mm Mashburn barrels that easily handle 75-76 gr H1000 with 160's for 3150 to a bit over 3200 fps. Mine does it with 162 Amax, 160 Partitions.160 AB's and 160 Bitterroots.
I think Joel's rifle may need a bit of load work with something else other than H1000,although too early to tell.
Truckdriver when I started this little Mashburn project the 28 Nosler obviously did not exist. It would make sense to buy a Nosler rifle and go that way.
But even if it did, I likely would have gone Mashburn because I have no idea how the Nosler case will function in a M70 action, and after my...
Scotty maybe old, and hopelessly retro but in truth there are very few hunting problems that can't be solved with a 175 gr Nosler partition at almost 3100 fps.
Interesting that I know one accomplished match shooter who feeds his Mashburn 195 gr Bergers and shoots them to 1500 yards or...
Maybe you'd like this? An Echols Shrike for a SA Rem 700. This one is RH but you could contact Ehols and find out if they are available in LH. They are made by McMillan. I like mine. Nice stock
30-40 years working with the 7 Rem Mag (ad most other commercial 7mm's both standard and magnum) made me aware of a couple of minor shortcomings of the 7 mm Rem Mag. One problem was a neck that was too short, and the other was that I felt the case could use a little bit more capacity.
I never...
One of my "pet loads" for the 7 RemMag is 70 gr RL25 with either the 150 Nosler Partition or 150 BT. Accuracy is excellent with either one and velocity was 3125 fps. That's what I would try.
RL22 will work as well and unless you routinely go from 90-100F to 20 below zero for your hunting I...
Oops! I just reread my post above and note that I said we necked the 8 mag to 375 which was a mistake.
We necked it to 358 caliber, since those Bitterroots were 250 gr 358 caliber. My faux pas.
Yes Sundra necked the 8 mag to 375,which of course is really no different ballistically than the 375...
Never considered the whole wildcatting process worthwhile, but after trading a bunch of 150 gr 270 Bitterroots for a couple hundred 250 gr 35 caliber Bitterroots, I reflected on the fact that I did not own a 35 caliber rifle.
Since the Bitterroots would stand as much velocity as I could give...
He has too many rifles anyway......
He discovered,,,as I did.....that keeping up with multiple wildcats is high maintenance. If you have too many some never get hunted in a serious way. To me "serious" is a decade of continuous use. :)
