I shot nearly all my elk with 139 grain cup and core Hornadys. That was quite a few. Never lost one and never had to track very far. Those bullets work best when started at 7-08 velocities. They open reliably without blowing up at short ranges and hang together to penetrate when going a little...
Sorry, lost count. Raised in Wyoming, started pronghorn at 14 years old. 75 now! Probably the most memorable was a buck running flat out crossing at about 80 yards. I had been using a 7x57 to shoot jackrabbits all winter the year before, and those bunnies taught me about fast moving targets...
Well count me in here! Dr. Mike has been complementary to the hunting efforts and results I've shared with my son. Every year I can count on birthday wishes from him here on the forum - just about the only ones I get from anyone anymore. Doc is a big ray of sunshine for me in this otherwise...
Just a fun coincidence, we use exactly the same load in my wife's tang safety Ruger also. We are in Wyoming too, only used for about 45 years on antelope and deer. She can shoot.
I've loaded several 95 to 100 gr. bullets using Winchester cases and CCI200 primers. Old Hodgdon data maxes out at 42.0 grains of IMR 4350 and that worked well for me. Check their website.
It is such a treat to come to the forum and see a post from you, Dr. Mike! You are so good about responding to posts and questions from others , it's been your turn for a while. I have no need for another rifle, except now I want a Whelen out of admiration if nothing else. Thank you!
Now if Forster would just make some quality target paper! I think the group would be smaller with less tear-out :) Always have to say something I guess, but I am seriously in awe of that outstanding group! Beautiful loading and shooting, Guy.
I found mine useful for checking earwax. I also found carbon rings at the front of the neck juncture I didn't know I had. I do chuckle at the guys who panic when their rifle that still shoots sub-moa shows firecracking, tool marks, streaks, etc. I got the Teslong one that feeds to my Windows...
I never have cared for the fit of the Encore synthetic buttstock, especially the comb height when using a low mounted scope. I'm not built all that weird but couldn't achieve a decent cheek weld. I've used a couple aftermarket tape and foam solutions and they have drawbacks as far as I'm...
Yep, they aren't cheap. Accident in 2005. We tried a couple devices, always challenged and difficult where we wanted to go. The old man (me) is getting older, and helping through mud and snow is getting tougher. Younger and stronger friends not always around. Considering what we all pay for...
I don't trust the paperclip method at all. I have used the little battery powered led lights that are a single light on a flexible stalk, put on my readers, and move light, eye, and case around. The light will make a distinct shadow ring if an internal separation has begun. I've used my...
Thanks, CL. Think I will put up a review, but it will take me a while to gather pictures and write. For now, his Action Trackchair has been a true gamechanger. We managed in the past with a couple devices, but they were inadequate in terms of traction, comfort, durability, etc. This thing just...
This is the one I found the day before Thanksgiving and he sent me home with. I started these two men out around 30 years ago. They invited me for a Thanksgiving week nostalgia hunt - it was a grand time we had!
My son, I mean. I've told his story before, and he continues to hunt with a passion. This is one of his best, harvested this afternoon with his 6.5-284. About 3 hours after I had to leave camp for home, which seems a little suspicious to me.....EE2
Headspace like already said, but also just maybe the powder measuring went bad. I've experienced some of that with both electronic and beam scales and it took a while to catch on. How did you measure CL? About the factory loads picture, the one with 3 before the separation and 4 after: it would...
I'm going to anneal next month. I'll probably do a better job of cleaning after resizing as well. I often take an alcohol rag and just wipe the lube off already-clean cases after resizing. I think perhaps I've over-used the rag and haven't paid enough attention to getting all the powdered...
