Thank you, Dr. Mike! Preacher, two reasons: One, I like it and use it for a bunch of other loads. Two, this is a really short barreled .30-06 and a fast powder like H 4895 seems to reduce the muzzle flash. That said, if it didn't work out, I'd be tempted to try a 4350. I have some IMR 4350...
I've always gotten those groups, at times, when testing a load, where you get two rounds right next to each other, then another one 2 inches away. Since getting a chronograph, I've noticed that sometimes when this happens, the errant shot had a much different velocity than the others...
I load my son's .308 down to about 2425 with H 4895 and 150 Speer BTSP bullets. It's very accurate and I think that bullet does a nice job of opening at low velocities, as well as having a good BC to retain energy for longer shots. I fired one into jugs once and it went through 4 gallon jugs...
Ok Dr. Mike, are you willing to run another for me? Once again my favorite powder has been left off the published data:
7mm-08
(Federal brass)
140 Nosler E-Tip
H 4895
2.8"
22" barrel
Thank you!!
That's helpful, Dr. Mike. Thanks! It's such a helpful program, but I feel bad using you all the time and it sounds like quite a process to try to get it working on a Mac..
I'm wondering if anyone has used Quickloads for the Nosler E Tip bullet? Did the results seem to match your experience? Just wondering since it sounds like that bullet can generate higher pressures at lower powder charges, than most others.
Also, a general question about Quick Loads...
I've had good luck with both of those powders in my 7mm-08. H 4895 is my go-to at the moment, with the 140 accubond/ballistic tip, but I've got an excellent load with 160 accubonds that uses IMR 4350, too. I'm over in the Adirondacks. I also am anxious for some tracking snow!
Yes, the reason I asked is that I'm trying to work up a reduced recoil load for this rifle. It's surprising that this powder isn't listed in Nosler's data. I would certainly start with IMR 4350 if I was looking for a standard velocity load.
I asked because I just tried it myself, for the first time. I have a good load that I worked up in the Spring, using the 140 NAB in my 7mm-08. I wanted to see if I could just switch to the BT for practice and keep everything the same. Finding the AB load had not been easy, so I was a bit...
I'm curious about your experience switching out ballistic tips and accubonds (keeping a load exactly the same, but switching (same grain) bullets). Have you found them to generally be equally accurate? Shoot to the same POI? Same velocity? Thanks!
To change things up a bit, the only .308 in my house is my kids' rifle. It's a TC Venture Compact. I load 150 Speer BTSP's down to about 2425fps, using H 4895. It shoots under 3/4" at 100 yards and is pretty mild on the shoulder. It's basically a .30-30 with a decent BC. Pretty fun little...
I'm kinda taking a stab at the OAL here. I'd like for it to be a bit on the short side, considering the fast powder and my goal of producing a relatively low-velocity load. I'm very open to thoughts on the OAL issue.
I'm curious how many of you use a "lead sled" or other similar device when load testing? Or, do you just use bags? I use two bags, and I'm not an awful shot, but I'm also not good enough to think that my results are entirely due to the rifle... By now, I've probably missed a good load, or two...
