So, I was fortunate to come into a little extra money and decided it best be spent on a moose hunt in BC. I am in Idaho and will be driving up. The outfitter is based just outside of Prince George area. This will be a 10 day horseback hunt approx. 16-20 miles from nearest road.
Done a lot of...
I have my dream rifle (Model 70 270 custom) and am building a twin to it in 338 win mag. Realistically, these two would cover me for a long time. But I have that condition were I always like to see whats new and that usually means purchasing. Plus my son is just starting to hunt and I want him...
I am seriously considering working with the 225 grain Swift A Frame in my new 338, but I am curious on something.
In my model 70, 270 over the course of a few days hunting, the nosler partitions will have the nose flattened from carrying and banging around in the magazine. I am assuming that...
Having a rifle built and now I need to think about loads. Never loaded for the .338, but I have some IMR4831, IMR4350, and RE 17/19/22.
I am wanting to work around a 225 grain bullet. I am thinking possibly a TSX, Partition, or A Frame. I want a tougher bullet as I built this rifle for a plains...
Wanted to give everyone an update as I picked up a few more parts, changed a couple things, and will be sending everything off end of this coming week to be put together.
1. I picked up the scope...Found a LNIB Swarovski AV 3-10X42, and got a great price on Ebay so that is the route I went...
I bucked up and laid down a deposit for a plains game hunt in S.A. for spring of 2018. Of course the 270 will be going, but this may be the only time I get over there and I really want to hunt a Zebra and an Eland, so I need a bigger rifle. I sold my 375 ruger and want a little more bullet mass...
A very special friend who was a "Grandfather Figure" to me recently passed and left me his Zeiss Dialyt 10x40b Binoculars as his last gift to me. Optically they seemed pretty good and to honor him, I left my 10x42 Leicas Geovids at home last week and took these Zeiss out on a mule deer hunt.
I...
Back from 8 days of Mule Deer and Elk in the Central Idaho. This is our annual Idaho General Tag, DIY hunt. The elk didn't cooperate this year, but the deer did.
My wife is not picky at all and was happy to take this nice spike on the second day. Made a great shot at 161 yards with the trusty...
I had a great hunt this past week in Central Wyoming. Saw hundreds of goats and passed up shooting chances on at least 18 borderline bucks. Found this old wide guy and couldn't say no as I loved his character. Horns were 14.25 and 14.5". Shot was 371 yards with the 300 RUM shooting 180 accubonds...
I have a 3 day Trophy Antelope hunt in Wyoming coming up in a couple weeks. This is a good hunt in a good unit with good chances of an 80"+ goat. When its all said and done (including travel and taxidermy) I will have over 4k invested in this hunt.
With that being said, I want to ensure I take...
In a couple of weeks I am driving across the border to Wyoming unit 25 for an Antelope hunt. The rifle I will be taking a a custom 270.
Winchester 70 Supergrade Action
25" #3 shilen ss barrel
McMillan hunter stock
Timney tigger
Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40
This summer I settled on an all around load...
I will be using 1 rifle for Deer, Elk, Bear, and Antelope...
Christensen Arms 300 RUM with Leupold VX3-I CDS 4.5-14x40 30mm CDS dial to 900 yards. Rifle is shooting 180 grain Nosler Accubonds at 3300 FPS. Most accurate big game rifle I have ever owned. Capable of 3 shot 4-5" groups out to 800...
Here is my new Long Range Thumper...Christensen Arms Carbon Fiber Barreled 300 RUM with 30mm 4.5-14x40 CDS with Windplex. Playing with 180 accubonds at 3350-3400 FPS. That will get me to 900 yards on the 1 turn CDS. (BTW, 180 bullet at 3400 FPS packs a wallop way out there)
Rifle with scope...
Thinking I have talked to myself into a new Ultra Long Range project. Right now I am leaning towards a carbon barrel rifle built on a 700 clone action. Goal is to be around 8.5 pounds with a NF 5.5-22x50 scope.
Anyways, down to the 28 or 30 nosler. I am really leaning towards the 30 as the 210...
Guys, I may have created a bug hole shooter... Got the rifle out today with Winchester Brass, FED 210 primers, and 140 nosler accubonds.
Shot first 2 fowling shots at 25 yards to get lined up on paper....Then moved back to 100 and started break in and group work up... Shots 3,4,5 behind 58.0...
Sometimes in life you can't leave well enough alone...The B&C Stock on my 270 just felt a bit big in my hands so I ordered a McMillan and decided the factory barrel wasn't good enough for what I wanted. Lastly, talked my self into a little more scope...Well here she is now...A perfect North...
First is my long range varmit rifle...
Savage 12 .223, 26" heavy barrel, weaver tactical pic base, 6 hole rings, SWFA 10X42 MIL/MIL Scope - loves 53 grain Hornady Superformance at 3500 FPS.
Second is my Long Range Big Game Rifle...
Tikka SS, 300 wsm, B&C medalist stock, Vortex Diamonback HP...
I purchased a box of these to try in my my 300 wsm today. The thought of these at 29-2950FPS is awesome in theory - if they shoot.
But man are these bullets long and on top of that I am shooting a tikka that requires I stuff the bullet way down in there.
Do you think there will be a problem...
