    300 Kong.....enjoy..Handloader magazine gets credit

Thanks so much for sharing the article. I really enjoy reading Bonafide reporting of the history of our cartridge development. Yea, you snooze, you lose. I stopped by Grices once on the way to camp. They had a Browning 20ga 26" English stocked Sporter used, in most excellent condition. It was...

    30-06 Brush Gun?

I don't have a 30-06, nor have I ever wanted one. However, should we ever be forced to limit the number of registered rifles that we own, I would have to strongly consider the 30-06 a strong candidate for my hunting rifle. I have this fine old cartridge bracketed by 308's and a 300 Win Mag. For...

    30-06 Brush Gun?

One would have to think that a 220 grain roundnose in a 30-06 would be a force to be reckoned with. .or. out of a 308. The problem that have with the '06 is overall rifle length. Long action vs short. Put a 20" brush length barrel on an '06 and you are better served by a 308. Sako's long action...

    Worst brass?

The worst Remington, Winchester and Hornady. I'm not real enamored with Nosler Brass. The best Lapua, Peterson, Alpha. I will not have a chamber where Lapua or Peterson is not available, particularly for match rifles. Calibers like 45-70 and 30-30 [lever guns] and revolvers, it's what's avaliable.

What have you taken deer with?

243 Win, 7-08 Rem, 308 Win, 338 Federal 270 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag Had a Remington Model 7 KS (custom shop) in 7BR. Hunted with it but no kills. I have a couple 6.5 Needmores but don't hunt with them. Always seem to grab the 7-08 first. Probably shot better than 75% of my deer...

    Nope. Not gonna do it.

I really like this post. You don't really have to use the whole case. Some of these subordinate loads just may shoot really well, and be just as effective as the cartridges that they emulate. Ya ' just don't know until you try. When I look at this FN, I see a 300 WSM barrel screwed into it...

    Nope. Not gonna do it.

I'd buy it just because it's a really clean FN and I don't have one of those. Many moons ago, I ordered an H&R in 7mm RM, thinking that it would be an FN 400. When I got the rifle, I was a Santa Barbara action. Those rifles used Fajen Aristocrat stocks. Styling reminiscent of the...

    I think it's the scope

Leupold has been my brand of choice in hunting rifle scopes most of my shooting life. I've sent more than a couple back. In years gone by, they were quick to do a replacement after one fix, on the second return. As time went on, that service policy degraded. I've always loved them for their...

    SOLD- Your African Rifle

The stock blank for that rifle was well laid out. For a heavy recoiling rifle, the grain should start in the toe, run straight through the grip and continue rising to the forend tip. Highly figured stocks generally do not lend themselves well to heavy caliber. A proper stock layout will move the...

Canada have some new laws coming?

Covid , defund the cops, and the crime rate have non-shooter general population types buying guns, mostly 9mm handguns, at an unprecedented rate. How do you go forward with a policy that tells the genpop that we can't protect ourselves when you handcuff the cops.

Best twist rate for a 308

I'm very fond of both calibers. I say, let the boy have the rifle that he is enthusiastic about. They both have their individual attributes which we could all expound upon for hours. Once that rifleman fire has been kindled, he very well may get the 7-08 in the future, "just because" he wants to...

Where are all the Ballistic Tips?

You're breakin' my heart. I just loaded the last five 150 7mm BT's for my 280 AI from a box that had a $11.95 price tag on it. The sad part is that they are lookin' like they are a really good choice for my rifle. RATS! Can't find them. I like to do load development with BT's and switch to...

    Cheap Rifles.

If you are referring to the Howa with the "green-black stock" it is probably the H-S Precision stock that has an internal aluminum chassis and not a Hogue. They do offer Hogue versions. I bought one of these Howa's in 6.5 "manbunn" last year so I know what they are. Those rifles are probably the...

    Pa bull elk

I have spent most of my hunting life at our camp on Kettle Creek PA where the PAPGC has propagated the elk herd. We had an apple orchard which the Elk Bulls would beat up. The initial area where the Elk herd started was in Benezette, about 40 miles west of our camp. I travelled through Benezette...

    Bear Hunting Poll ?

My wife and I hunted black bear at Libby Camps in Northern Maine . It was a baited bear hunt where we were in stands and the ranges were about 35 yards. Our pre-hunt lecture instructed the hunters to only take broadside double lung shots. They also prefer caliber starting at 30. Bear have...

    components coming back

I was in my LGS last week. They had FED 210M for $79.95/1000 and H-4831SC at $45/lb. It is looking up.

    7-08, Win 760 question

I've used 760 with 139-140's in a couple 7-08's. I recommend magnum primers with 760. I had one Sako A1 that would shoot less than an inch at 100 yards for five shot groups at 2825 fps with 140 BT's. That was 48.0 grs and flattened primers. My other favorite 7-08 powder is IMR-4350. I tried...

    Experiences with 8MM's

Nice bear. Thanks for sharing. The 8mm is a forgotten caliber here in the US. I knew a Swiss Hunter who swore by the 8x68 for European boar. He touted full penetration through the tough side plates to leave a blood trail.

338-08 or light loads in 338WM?

I've owned three different 338 WM's and a 338 Federal. Two of the 338 WM's had gone down the road before I built a 338 Federal. During this entire period of gun safe transition, I have always considered at the 338-06. One can weigh the pros and cons of the various case capacities but in my mind...

    180 Hornady RN.

Our experience in the North Central PA woods for whitetail with the Hornady RN was quite similar to Don's. Myself, my brother and sister-in-law all hunted deer with Sako 243's stoked with the 100 gain Hornady round nose. That was a very accurate, consistently reliable performing bullet in...
