What I've Learned By Reading the News

Dr. Mike, just confirming that our government, (ALL PARTIES) are idiots. Plato — 'Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber.'

Ambidextrous rifle in 338 Fed or 358 Win or ?

Dan, I would second the Encore with something in the .260 rem, 7mm-08, or .308 version. The one I had and traded in a couple years ago was the .260 Rem. with a custom, i think 1:8" twist barrel topped with a Luepold 2.5 - 8 VariX III scope (old scope from the 80s). It was light, easy to carry...

Share your spring 2020 bear hunting photos

Gerry, Congratulations on a very nice bear, and thanks for sharing the story. Were you able to call for assistance to transport the bruin to camp? How much residual body fat would your bear have compared to one taken in the fall? Good luck filling your second tag after mentoring the young...

    Downloading the 30-06

Personally I would consider a Pachmayr slip on recoil pad. I have put one on my Ruger Number one in 30-06 which has the original hard rubber recoil pad on it. I perceive a significant improvement in felt recoil while preserving the original pad for the next owner to enjoy. The slight increase...

    Black Bear

Very Handsome Bear Guy, and looking right at you too.. I was of the notion that spring Black Bears had scruffy coats but the photo dispels that for sure. Thanks for sharing.. Rol

Small Birds, I'll start with Chukar

Beautiful subjects and photography Guy.. Thanks for sharing. This morning I had an avian experience of a different type. We have a large flowering crab tree, which the birds like to perch in. It is adjacent to the north side of our house where I like to park my truck. Recently, much to my...

    concentricity issues

Are you de-priming as you resize? If so is your expander button high on the neck of the de-priming stem? I have found improved concentricity using a de-primer die as a separate step in reloading. After reading some about the whole reloading process I switched to sizing the necks with a...

    Freezer Surprise

Nice find in the freezer. and looks like it was prepared very well. From my limited experience I have found limited, if any, freezer burn on game meat stored in the freezer for over 12 months. My objective is to enjoy it long before that time, but reality does not always equal objectives. Stay...

    Braised Squirrel. (Pic Heavy)

Last fall i had the pleasure of a call from a fireman friend who had been squirrel hunting with his mother and he invited me to a family get together with roasted squirrel as the main course, with a little red wine on the side.. Firemen are noted for culinary skill and my host is no...

Can deer smell corn kernels through the snow?

Dan, I cannot speak directly to their sense to smell corn, but I have personally seen where they paw through the snow to locate acorns under oak trees. Knowing their sense of smell to detect humans it would be a good bet they can smell kernels of corn under the snow. Rol

Refinishing a Rem 700 BDzl wood stock?

Good luck with your project. Please share photos before and after. My father used boiled linseed oil thinned with turpentine as a finish on cherry furniture that he built. I think he decreased the turpentine as he added multiple coats. Slow and easy will produce a beautiful result.

    Optics for a S&W Model 29 .44 magnum

Recently I purchased a S&W Model 29 with 4" barrel to replace a Ruger Redhawk of the same caliber that I had traded for another firearm. After 6 very successful and enjoyable years this year I had decided take a break and not to venture west to hunt Montana. This leaves me with a new to me...

    Garden

Looks real nice Guy, it will be nice to see your pictures as the seasons progress. Our soil is too moist and cold to plant yet. I am in the process of transcribing my Grandmother's notebook and among the pages I found this: "No garden for me, for me, Last year all I grew was tired". On a...
