My buddy in CO is thinking of trying the 265 ABLR or 210 Swift Scirocco in his .340 Weatherby. He's got RL26, along with several other powders, and wondering what his top-end might be with those bullets. Anybody care to see what Quickload thinks?
I feel like I've read before about someone having trouble getting the 225 AB to shoot.
If I were to try them in my rifle, I'd start with H4350. If that didn't work, I'd pick two more between RL16, RL17, H4831, or 7828. If it wouldn't shoot with one of those, either, I wouldn't buy another box...
I'm gonna post some more observations I've had, but it might not be very well organized. Sorry if this gets hard to read/follow.
TAC is a decent powder in this cartridge. It just was t very accurate in my rifle. Varget is right in the burn range, but it's too bulky for the tiny Grendel. 4895...
I've got a Howa Mini bolt action in the Grendel. I could use AR Comp for everything in this rifle. It's at or near the top in both speed and accuracy for 107's, 123's, 130's, and 140's. I've got some 147's loaded up to try, as well.
There's a whole forum dedicated to the Grendel(65grendel.com)...
I forgot about this thread, but thought I'd go ahead and share results. My friend ended up using RL26 and the 75 AMax for 3550 fps that last summer I lived in CO. It was a beast all the way out to 1200 yards. It also very quickly put the finishing touches on the rest of his rifle's throat. Ha...
I just shot some 180 BT's with RL26 in Hornady brass, also with CCI 200's and seated to 3.34" in a 22" barrel. I got:
62.5- 2818
63.0- 2830
63.5- 2836
64.0- 2873
64.5- 2879
I'm attributing my slower speeds to the fact that this Hornady brass has a hair more case capacity than Winchester. Even...
I loaded up a set of 5 last night- 62.5, 63, 63.5, 64, and 64.5 grains. Not sure when I'll get out to shoot them, but I'm interested to see how our speeds match up.
I used RL17 when I had a 7-08 with 140's to 168's. It should give more speed than probably any other powder with those bullet weights. The only contenders might be the new RL16 and RL26.
I was able to push those 140 Berger over 3000 fps and 162/168's over 2700 from a 22" barrel without any hint...
Oh, and maybe I missed it, but what primers are you using? I've heard before of people having better success with magnum primers when using even smaller doses of slow-burning powders, and 63.8 grains is already starting to get into the range of "magnum" type charge weights, anyway.
If your rifle likes to be pushed hard, and Quickload thinks that 2900 fps is still only 61.5K psi, and your best result was at that velocity, and there weren't any pressure signs, why wouldn't you try a notch or two higher and see if it gets even better or establishes that 63.8 is possibly...
My rifle has never liked 180's and I've got 50 180 BT's left along with a bit of RL26 from last year that I never settled on a load for anything with. I might try that combo myself and see if maybe this rifle will like 180's at a higher speed than I've ever tried before.
Standard or magnum...
I'm not actually building anything right now, but if I were, I'd go 1:8" for either cartridge.
I guess the consensus, then, is that there is really are two contenders now for "best use of a Remington short action." I'm still leaning towards the Creedmoor having taken the title, though. There...
I always thought a 7-08 on a Remington 700 short action in a light stock would be about the ultimate general purpose(and affordable) hunting rifle. 120-160 grain bullets for anything from coyotes to elk. But will all the rage around the 6.5's these days, and especially the Creedmoor, I'm...
We took the baby back to my parents' to visit family this weekend, so I shot some jugs for the first time in too long. Before we left, I just loaded up 1 each of the three title bullets and a load that I knew would be safe but near-ish max. I threw 20 empty jugs I had been saving and my...
Start at the published starting load and work up with your chronograph until you get to the maximum published velocity. There isn't enough difference between those two bullets to worry about, and the max SAAMI pressure in a 30-06 is low enough to provide some leeway. Add/subtract about 25 fps...
