That is exactly the performance I've been getting from the ABs for years- good accuracy, outstanding penetration, excellent and controlled expansion.
I've got enough to last me the rest of my days...and plan on keeping it that way!
Not sure how many caribou I've taken... it's gotta be several dozen over the years. I've used a 300WSM, 308, 7-08, 270, 6.5CM, 338WM, 375H&H, 33NOS.
I'm sure I've forgotten one or two...
I've done quite a bit with low recoil loads in the .308.
I did heavy bullets (180s) using Trail Boss and light bullets (125s) with H4895. For deer, I believe the light bullets going faster...worked better.
I did not try the 150-170FP for the 30-30, but it should work fine since those...
I love these little carbines. The older I get and the harder it is to see the sights on my pistol...the more I like guns like this for self defense.
I chronographed some 125JHPs at over 2000 fps from a carbine a few years back. I've no doubt that would turn off BGs in a real hurry.
I'm back in E. Tennessee for a while and I'm thinking hard about a new white-tailed deer rifle. I've given passing thought to the 7-08, and a serious look at another 6.5CM and even played around with the idea of a micro-action in 6ARC. In my area, the ranges tend to be close and the deer tend to...
I'm left handed, but right eye dominant and shoot right handed. My son is the exact opposite...right handed but left eye dominant and he shoots lefty.
After many years teaching people to shoot, I won't even bother teaching someone to shoot to their "handedness" if it conflicts. with their eye...
Double rifles are just plain classy. One of my dumber moments in firearms acquisition was passing on a new Heym 88B in 470NE for the low, low price of $6,000 somewhere around 2008.
Of course, in the throes of the global financial meltdown, $6k was a considerable sum for a rifle I had little...
It kinda depends on several factors. My 300WSM is generally good for 1 MOA most days at the bench...more like 1.5MOA from prone. It's killed a ton of meat at this point so I'd have to say it's more than adequate at the task. I've had a few more accurate big game rifles, and several significantly...
In the sub 6 pound range I've had .308, 7-08, and 6.5CM... I'd do any of them again.
Of the three, the 6.5 was easily the most accurate and most pleasant to shoot but that was in a particular rifle. I'd not lean toward a magnum cartridge (although I dearly love the 300WSM) based on your game...
I'm with Bear on this one...300 H&H will do it all. I've hunted mountainous terrain and the need to reach out across a canyon seems to pop up pretty regularly.
Scoped rifle over bait is no handicap and likely better in low light. I've never hunted with hounds, but my guess is your going to be...
I really like my CZ 452 "Special Training Rifle" .22LR... it's one of those weird ones, 25" barrel and hugely optimistic tangent sights all the way out to 175 meters.
I really like long range plinking at clays with it. You just drop them in there like artillery!
It looks nice and very well made.
The value proposition is a tough one, since most basic presses work fine and will outlast any of us with anything approaching regular use.
